Hello... I'll be down in WDW in a few weeks and would like to get a pearl from a pick-a-pearl stand for my 5yo GD. Where is the best place to get one, how much do they go for, and are ther any hidden cost? How much for a pearl and have them put it on a charm?

-Thanks:banana:

We went to the store in Japan in EPCOT I think it was $15 for the pearl and you could get settings in the $20 range but also much more expensive.

I did the one at downtown Disney last year. I believe it was $15 for the pearl. We spent about $100 on the setting (white gold ring) but could have gone much cheaper.

One suggestion is to search Etsy, Ebay, etc for a "pearl cage" necklace. Many places sell a Cinderella Coach one for example. I just saw one on Etsy for $7, then you can just buy the pearl when you get there, pop it in and you're all set.
It's great fun picking them out your granddaughter will be all for the show. :)

They also have a pearl shack at the Beach Club. I can't remember what I paid for the pearl but I believe it was the same price as the one's in the Japan building. The big difference was there was no line to pick the pearl. It's on the walkway to Epcot halfway between the "shipwreck" and the dock with the lighthouse. It's on the lagoon side of the pathway. The had a nice selection of settings to display the pearl. Price varied significantly depending upon what type of setting you chose. Anywhere from cheap to ridiculously expensive.

Love Love Love the pick-a-pearl in Japan ! :cheer2: I have several from there. They make a real big deal about each and every pearl they open and make everyone feel so special in the process. There is no pressure to have it mounted or buy any extras. I have the Cinderella coach and two other cages and earrings. You can just bring it home and have your own jeweler work with it if you wish. I adore mine. Will be getting another real soon !:dance3:

The pick a pearl stand at DTD was closed last week. I've found the cheapest settings were at Japan and the most expensive were at BC. I usually get mine at Japan. :thumbsup2

We get one every time we go. There is one in DTD and one in Japan. Both prices are the same. Japan does a better presentation with it. Like they do the bows and hit the drum and have you help count. Then they show it to everyone. The hidden cost would be if you want to get a necklace. We just collect our and every now and then take them out to look at them. We have about 20 now.

remember the ugly old bearded ones are frequently overlooked -- and may have been around for a long time ----

I think the best experience is the one in Japan, they make it a special event.

I loved doing this too. Our first trip to DW we bought the cinderalla cages for my daughter and neice and it worked perfectly.. $15 for the pearl and the cages were less than $5 each.

However, this last trip, we bought a dolphin cage for my daughter thinking we could do the same thing. However, the pearl she picked was too big for the cage. So, instead of buying a setting there, I let my son pick out a pearl too thinking we could get that one in the cage. But then he ended up getting a blue pearl that he didn't want to part with(nor did my daughter want). So now, we were two pearls in and had to buy settings for both of them at Disney. What I thought was going to cost us under $20, ended up costing us close to $100. It is not cheap to get a setting to fit a bigger pearl.

So, it can be cheap, or not ;)

Absolutely! DD16 loves to do this every time we go to Epcot. It's fun, relatively cheap (unless you buy an expensive setting), and the pearls are always really pretty.

On our last trip in May, 2013, the oyster DD16 picked contained a rare, silver pearl, and it was a pretty good size one (I'd have to ask her, I forget how many mm it was). I didn't know you could get settings there (I'll admit, I didn't pay that much attention)-we might take the silver pearl back with us this fall, and get a setting for it.

Ok... so now i have a keepsake for my grand daughter and she can pick it out... now what can my 8 yo grandson can pick out for a keepsake around the same cost?

It isn't very boy-ish, but you can pick up a hand fan at the Japanese pavillion, and they'll write his name on it in Japanese. Really very cool.

Not sure, otherwise.
