Photoshop Photography program

I just purchased a subscription to this because they have a deal where you get it for $9.99 a month even if you don't own an older version of photoshop and the deal ends tomorrow.
I can cancel within 30 days for a full refund though.
I saw that I can buy lightroom for around $100, and that would be mine to keep right? Not a subscription? I'm guessing this ends up being a better deal in the end because I can use the same program for a few years before updating?
Is it better to have both programs?
Just want to make sure there isn't a better way to get both that I'm not aware of.

I guess the answer depends on just what you want to do with your pictures. If Lightroom is adequate for your needs then I'd agree with your analysis that it would be better to buy LR over doing the Adobe subscription.

One other thing to factor into your analysis is that once you go to Adobe's subscriptionwear model you are pretty much committed forever.

ETA: You can use those programs as long as you want. I still am using PSE5, which I think I purchased around 2006. Works just fine, but thought it may be time to upgrade. Actually really want the Premiere Elements for the video editing.

If you only want/need Lightroom, you're better off buying lightroom.

If you would get value out of both, then the $9.99 monthly rate is great.

The creative cloud deal going on right now that I've seen for $9.99 is for a subscription for Photoshop and Lightroom. So if you're dong that particular deal there is no need to buy Lightroom... unless you decide not to do the subscription. This is probably the best deal to get both if you want Photoshop CC. But CC is overkill for many home users and the cheaper Photoshop Elements is sometimes a better choice. But it depends what you want to do image editing wise.

When I decided to do a Creative Cloud subscription I took all the software I needed to buy and figures out how many months worth of subscription money that equaled. (a lot like figuring out if the dining plan is the right fit LOL) Do the math and see if it's a god deal for you.

As far as needing both.... I personally could survive without Lightroom. It would slow down my workflow a little but I'd get by. I can't get by without Photoshop.

When I heard about the CC i thought it sounded interesting but way too much money for me. As a hobbyist who is never going to sell anything $49.99 for the CC was highway robbery. Being a teacher I could have got the 1st year at a discounted rate of 19.99. The deal was getting better for me but again i couldn't justify the cost based on what I was going to use. When the 9.99 deal came about i decided to give it a closer look. My main concern was the price increase after the 1st year. It is very unclear what will happen with pricing at that time. All Adobe says it the subscription will renew at the current rate. If it goes to 49.99 I am going to cancel. If it stays around the 10-12 a month range i will keep going.

What decided it for me was I can have Lightroom 5 (had 4) and the newest version of Photoshop (currently used elements 10). If i purchased both it would be over the 1 year subscription of $120. In addition these programs are constantly updated, something i would have to pay for otherwise. Lightroom 6 should be out in the summer which would cost me at least another 79.99.

It does not work for everyone, add it up and see what works for you.

I decided (for now) to keep the subscription! I think it's probably very much overkill for the time being, and I would probably be just fine with photshop elements for a few years at least, but I really hope to take photography classes at our local community college this summer, and photoshop classes as well, so I think in the long run it will be a good fit. (whew, that was one heck of a run on sentence! lol)
I haven't even tried anything in either program yet because I'm still trying to get the hang of my camera, but I'm looking forward to learning them both!
