Photos on the ship

Will photographers on the ship take pictures for you with your camera with the backdrops, characters, etc? I wasn't interested in purchasing the photo package

The shutters employees will not take photos with your personal camera with characters or backdrops. They are not allowed to as it works directly against the interest of their employer.
The character friends who are there for character appearances will usually take a picture with your camera. There is usually no one at the backdrop locations to take a pic unless you wanted to ask someone in line behind/ahead of you.

This has been my experience too.

The photographers in the lobby with backdrops in the evening will not take pictures using your camera, but they will tolerate someone else taking pictures as long as it doesn't slow down the line.

The Disney assistants during character greetings have been willing (and sometimes even volunteered) to take pictures with another camera. A few weeks ago, a cast member asked if I wanted her to take a shot with my phone, and she not only took several still shots but also a 15-second video clip of my daughter, Minnie, and me.

That's not been my experience. Even the basic backdrop only places had a DCL CM helping. We had our picture taken at them by the CM, not a person in line.

That has not been ours so it is obviously a YMMV issue. Might get lucky, might not.

Just off the Fantasy...if there was a character present at a backdrop (or wherever else on the ship), there was a CM who would take pictures. When we stood in the lines for "family photos" in front of the "sunset ship" or the random solid/geometric patterns, only photographers were present...but maybe that isn't always the case?
