I was able to get some really good pictures on our WDW trip and other places lately by setting the camera to "scene" mode and selecting indoor. You can actually see on the screen how the picture lightens up as the camera lets in more light. I have a Canon S2 and love it. I haven't had it long enough to have tried the manual mode, but I plan to before our next trip next year.
I just wish I had figured out the indoor setting before we went to CRT-I had inadverdently turned OFF the flash before the pics with Belle and Snow White! UGH! A little dark, but still it was CRT so I printed them anyway!
