Photography Question

Having seen so many great photos on here I figured this would be a great place to ask my question.

While I know we can take pictures pretty much anywhere while at DLR, can we use tripods, if they are not in the way of people getting by of course? I would love to get some better shots for my portfolio and for keepsakes of the fireworks and nights shows. I can't say there I ever noticed others doing this, but I am usually too focused on all the other sights and sparklies!

Any info would be greatly appreciated. :cool1:

Dont see a problem with it. I've seen people use their tripods while at the parks

I've seen people with tripods set up for the fireworks, but they were they early and were not taking up a lot of space. Plus it wasn't that busy the day I noticed it. If you are perhaps a prime viewing area (of course you would be for pics) you might try a mono pod? I don't see them used much, but it might be an option. I usually just free hand fireworks with a fast prime lens.

EDIT: Another tip: Watch the fireworks at least once without the camera in your hands at all, especially if it is Remember Dreams Come True. You want to soak it in first. I find when I am shooting something there is a big disconnect.

There are people with them for sure as noted by others. Though i should say that none are ever in my way. So either people with them are very conscious of staying out of the way or were told to do so and then just carrying them around.

Thanks for the info and suggestions.

I have seen the fireworks sans camera. Was there twice last year and also the year before. :)

I agree with trying to be unobtrusive. I don't want to spoil someone else's view. Most likely try one night with my fast lens to see how that goes and then if need be a second night with tripod. If can get right location hoping not to have to have it so high and just adjust it for an upward angle - if that makes sense.

Monopod is a thought but my hands at times cannot hold things very well so that is my main concern there. Will look in to it though.

Thanks. :thumbsup2

There is a photography board that may help on this site. There was a flap a while ago about the size of the tripod, big vs small. Some had said they we stopped by security from bringing the larger style but not sure at present.
I have used a tripod everywhere in the park without problem but it is small collapsed and easy to carry around and set up. More lately I use high ISO settings with VR to get most shots except the time exposures. Have fun.
