Photography book recommendations

I am a newbie and have read it several times and it sits open on my counter much of the time:rotfl: So another :thumbsup2!

Yep that is when it clicked for me too when I read that book.

Also read and re-read your cameras manual. You never know what you will pick out of it at later times. I know I have done that. I had some time to kill while watching some virus scans on my old computer and read the manual and learned something that I never fully understood. So definitely that one.

There was another I checked out from the library on light. It was a great read but I had it before I had an SLR and wish I could remember the name. :( I'd love to read it now.

Got my copy of Understanding Exposure on the way via the mail right now!

I also would get a book that is specifically about your camera too. I like the Magic Lantern guides. It goes into a bit more detail with example photos than your manual.

which one of these books would you reccomend?
David Busch's Sony Alpha DSLR-A380/A330/A230 Guide to Digital SLR Photography by David D. Busch
Magic Lantern Guides: Sony a230/a330/a380 Multimedia Workshop by Lark Books

I bought David Busch's Sony A100 Field Guide for DH and thought it was helpful for getting to know the specific camera itself as well as some basic photography information. And I thought it had enough additional information compared to the manual to make it worthwhile.

I have Busch's guide for the A700 and the Magic Lantern Guide and I have to say I prefer the Busch's Guide. I was always able to quickly search for and find answers to my questions and issues.

I have Busch's A300 guide and refer to it often. I upgraded to the A500 recently and will purchase this version when I see it.:thumbsup2

I've got four photography books on pre-order with Amazon. I'm still behind on reading the ones I have, but these all look pretty cool.

In release order the books are:

Layers: The Complete Guide to Photoshop's Most Powerful Feature by Matt Kloskowski. It's actually the second edition of the book. Several people recommended the first edition to me, but I never got around to getting it. This edition ships on 11/16. NAPP is pushing their members only deal, but after shipping, it's cheaper get it on Amazon (assuming that you get free shipping there).

Composition: From Snapshots to Great Shots by Laurie Excell. I don't know anything about the author and almost nothing about the book. Good composition books are hard to find, so I figured I'd take a chance on this one. This one should ship on 12/1.

Speedliter's Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites by Syl Arena. Once again, I don't know whether this book will be any good, but there aren't a lot on the topic so I'm taking a chance. This one ships on 12/29. It was supposed to ship earlier but was delayed.

Sketching Light by Joe McNally. I love all of the prior books by McNally and find them inspirational. I just finished his beginner/intermediate book, LIFE Guide to Digital Photography: Everything You Need to Shoot Like the Pros, and found it to be very good. Sketching Light is due at the end of March.

Any other good photography books coming out that anyone wants to mention?

I just keep rereading the owners manual to my camera, sooner or later I'll graduate to bigger books!

Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Flash". It was originally going to be released 4/11 but according to Border's Books it looks like it was pushed back to 8/11

600 some pages of electronic awesomeness!!! :thumbsup2

I had no idea there were so many things that I now must absolutely have!!! :woohoo: :lmao:

I got it yesterday, too. I wonder how much B&H spends on this thing? I've never purchased anything from B&H, yet I think I receive two (I think) catalogs like this per year.

Don't get me wrong, I like the catalog, but I'd rather have no catalog and lower prices. Not that B&H prices are bad, but I've never found them to have the best price on anything.
