Photographing the Lunar Eclipse

Well, like Kevin predicted in another thread about this, the skies in Sarasota were cloud covered. I got a small glimpse of the beginning of the eclipse but then it all went to clouds again. I never even got the camera out. Oh well. I took one the night before when it was perfectly clear. I wanted to check out the Sigma "Bigma" and how it would take shots of the moon. Here is the best I got. This was cropped to the the edge of the moon, but the overall pic wasn't bad as it was taken at 500mm.

Not too thrilled with the results but here's mine- kind of hit & miss clouds.

We had clouds here as well, but got a lucky break for a little while. They kept coming back, but I caught a few shots in between. The bigger problem was the haze that seemed to stick around. It sort of killed the chance of a really good non-blurry shot. After five years here, I can tell you that the "Sunshine State" should be called the "Cloudy State". At least we do not seem to get the dull overcast days like I used to have in the Ohio River Valley.

Despite my earlier moaning in this thread, I thought I would post a few of my pictures. I was using the 75-300mm USM III on my Rebel XTi on a tripod. As I said, auto focus was working well for me, but I experienced some camera shake from the wind. These were cropped down quite a bit so you don't see the little streaks of light the stars became as a result of camera shake

Well, I had a frustrating time of it. I was busy until about 9pm, and leaving my parent's house, the moon was crystal-clear in the sky and approaching half eclipse. I drove the ~3 miles to our house and got myself geared up. Tripod, remote shutter release, Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm F2.8-4.0, etc... it was 20' so I got myself bundled up tight, jacket and hat on and gloves nearby and good warm shoes (and sorry, I'll sooner cut my feet off before I ever wear Crocs )... and I get outside, and I can barely even see the moon any more! It's totally blurry. I take a couple shots just to say that I did, which are just blurs, and haul everything back inside. I poked my head out a couple times later to see how the moon looked, and it was completely invisible at that point. Argh.
