^The noise didn't really both me all that much. It was pretty heavy out of the camera so applied some NR in LR but then when I used detail extractor and pro contrast in Nik Color Efex it added more. Sent it back to LR and added a little more NR. After that I sent it in Photoshop and tried your idea about creating a layer with heavy NR and then the other layer i used high pass to sharpen it. Again for some reason, my finished version I saw in LR wasn't as noisy as how it looks now in Flickr and on here for some reason so my next photo I will have to take that into consideration.

Did you simply blend the 2 layers? I used the heavy NR layer as a basically opaque layer, and then "erased" areas where I was willing to take noise in exchange for detail.

I love being able to see some detail in the magazine clippings in the background in your shot.

I'm going to blame the Nik filters for the noise.

Everyone has different tastes. Personally, I don't mind softening an image slightly to get rid of ugly noise. Others will take take the noise as the price of enhancing every detail.

I just used overlay and changed the opacity and didn't erase anything. Nik adds a lot of noise but sometimes the end result is worth it.

One thing I want to work on more is using multiple layers and getting better with it. Only problem is its time consuming and life doesn't offer me much free time these days lol

Know the feeling.

But yeah.... a simple fix is to create a heavy NR layer. Ultra heavy. And use it 100% in areas that are really flat and noisy without detail anyway.

So my 7-year-old decided she loves carrying around my A99 and shooting with it. It's twice her size. But she recently got a new shirt with a picture of a camera on it. So she pulled it out of her closet and told me that this weekend, she wants to wear her camera shirt and go shooting with me. (Of course she needs the right ensemble... My wife is so happy to have a true girly girl).
