I own a Nikon D3000 and recently purchased a 55-300 lens. I do like taking abstract photos, but most of all photos of children. Here is one of my favorites

I am ready to buy my first Nikon. I think I want the D3100 as I am a true novice and the Guide mode on it sounds like it would be a big help. I have also considered the D90 and the new D5100. Any thoughts to help me in my decision. I would really appreciate any help. I am a 70 year old grandmother who takes thousands of pictures and want to improve my skills.

Here's the Texas Capitol dome. Very common shot, but everyone has to take it.

I must say the last several photos you have posted have been absolutely beautiful! The colors and detail are amazing and really beyond words that I have to describe them.
I have really enjoyed the architectural photos of the Capital.
Any secrets to your success you want the share?:confused3

I'm also a novice. I got a D3100 in December. I am just starting to really learn about it & I do love it. It's been pretty user-friendly for someone like me, who's just starting to really learn about photography. I did recently take a beginners digital photography class at a reputable camera shop in my area. I would also recommend a class like that to help you understand the fundamentals.

I love this photo. I have yet to attempt it. Mostly bc I do not know how. Any tips?

I suspended a plastic bag over a bowl of water and put a pin hole in the bag. I focused on where the drops were falling to shoot. I used fabric to cover my background to get the color. The camera needs to be on a tripod and you will have to take literally hundreds of shots. I shot nearly 300 pictures and ended up with about 10 that were really cool and 2 that I was able to capture the full ball of water. I used my flash wireless to illuminate the fabric.
