Photo Sharing: Nikon

I am a 70 year old grandmother who loves to take pictures. I currently have a Sony DSC-H5. I am thinking a Nikon 3100 would be what I want to buy. If I get it I want to take a class to help me know what I am doing. Is this a good idea? Also, I have been trying PhotoShop Elements 9 but was wondering what would be a good idea for a beginner?
