Like KYCruiseCrazy said practice, try different modes just don't stay in "auto mode" if you want to learn. I would also pick up the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003
Great book to get started with.
I only do slight adjustments with my shots, I not into the HDR look with the over saturated sky's and to me not natural look of the shots. I will adjust for WB and some levels and curves and minor adjustment in the colors to get as close as to what I see naturally.
SO how BEAUTIFUL is that?????? Gotta love that late afternoon light... and how inspired to take a picture of something so ordinary and have it be so beautiful!
