Hello everyone!
Background: I will have a group of six people across 3 cabins on an upcoming cruise.
My understanding is that if I pre-purchase a photo package it would be linked to one cabin only, and that any photos I want to select as part of that package must include at least one of the individuals booked in the cabin that is linked to the photo purchase. Is this correct? Is there any difference between the photo package and the photo book (for the book, could I select across the 3 cabins when designing?)?
And, just curious: how do they know what photos go to what cabins (facial recognition software, or do they scan your card?)?
Lastly, any advice for getting the most out of the photo package or book options? Are there schedules of times/places to look for the photopass photographers?
Thanks!!

You are correct in thinking that one person from the purchasing stateroom needs to be in the shot for it to show up in your account. The photobook is no different since they will not make available a picture without a guest from the stateroom in the list of pictures that you pick from to create it.

While they ask for the stateroom number (or enter the table number for pictures taken in the dining room) when they take a picture, you can't fool the system since all pictures go through a facial-recognition software to filter out those that do not meet that rule. It helps them to fix any mistake and eliminate cheating.

It also allows them to associate to your account pictures taken in contexts where they can't ask for a stateroom number, like at a party, on a top deck or an excursion.

I believe the only exception to that rule is if one immediate family is spread across multiple rooms.
Here is that rule, taken from the DCL website :

Joining your stateroom photos with photos from another stateroom into a single account is only available (i) once a package is purchased and (ii) if you have children (immediate family only) under 21 in the stateroom you wish to join to your account. Anyone else age 21 and over in the joined stateroom will not be in the photos in your package or available for onboard or post-cruise downloading. You must specifically request the joining of staterooms to a crew member in Shutters Photography Shop.

Interesting, I hadn't found that info, thank you!
I do have one DD (18) in the second stateroom and another DD (20) in the third stateroom, so I will probably ask them about it further once onboard. I do really appreciate having this info in advance!
Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the replies!

How much is a photo package? I am trying to budget for our cruise in March (5 day on Dream).
Thanks!
