Photo Opportunity at Disney World

Has anyone used the Disney World photo op system set up whereby you can pose for family photos with scenic backgrounds and special characters at many stations throughout the park? Our family is going to DW in August and we want to find out if this is something that we should sign up for. Is it expensive? I'm hearing that you pose for these photos then have the opportunity to buy them later. Not sure how this works of if it's even worth the price. Any information from you DW fans would be greatly appreciated.
