Photo Board Assignment: Winter Scavenger Hunt, January-April, 2012

I'm glad to see the scavenger hunt back again and think the new concept will make it a bit more interesting. Thanks again for doing this Pea-N-Me. And good pics already from those of you that have started.

Here's one for On The Side of Angels and All That Glitters Is Not Gold. The colors aren't quite what I wanted, but to get the glitter (blue, in this case) to sparkle I had to do a little light magic.

OK, so who got out today?

And how did you like using the phrases instead of the words?

I have to say I haven't been out today but I'm hoping for at least a couple pictures before the night's out.

I LOVE having the phrases. It makes me think about how to make shots work and gives me some great ideas. Loving this scavenger hunt!

I've been taking pics, I just have to get them downloaded.

Glad people are liking the phrases. I like them too, just having trouble remembering them all! Definitely going to have to keep the list with me and keep re-reading it!

Kong Hee Fatt Choy! It was Chinese New Year on Monday and life for me has been revolving round it this week.

I had to pick up some items from the local chinese shops near me on Sunday and I hadn't realised that they were holding the street celebrations early. I didn't have long but did snap a couple of pics.....

Baby, It's Cold Outside...NOT!

Preaching to the Choir Well....they were chanting and only stopped to draw breath when the monk rang that bell he's holding. Is that Saved by the Bell?

Writing on the Wall It's all Chinese to me! but it does end up as the 'wall' around this marquee.

It's the Year of the Dragon and I wish I had more time to stay for the Dragon procession. The procession is Few and Far Between.

I missed the food, they were all just setting up when I got there. But I did manage to get a couple.

I was running around on that day because it was Chinese New Year's Eve.

It is a tradition on Chinese New Year's eve for anyone of chinese descent to head 'home' to the oldest family member's home for dinner. Usually, this means Mum's home and Mum's cooking. We were having a Steam Boat for dinner. You might also know steam boat as Chinese fondue or Shabu shabu or lok lok....most asian cultures will have a variation of this meal.

The beauty of a steam boat is that everyone cooks their own dinner. Mum just needs to provide the raw ingredients....most of which is available at Asian grocers as is...or is simple to assemble at home.

Mum stuffed her own prawn wontons and I thought I'd take the opportunity to grab a shot of Baker's Dozen.

When I got home and unpacked the picture....and did a double count, I realised that I had 14 on the plate; not 13!

Close but no Cigar! :headache:

Chinese New Year day....and more running around. But this time, I'd been given a tip that there was troupe of Lion Dancers heading to a local Chinese grocery shop nearby.

2012-01-232012Jan23LionDance001.jpg

The Lion Dance is performed to ward off evil spirits. In return, the lion is provided payment in the form of a red packet or 'ang pow', wrapped up in green vegetable 'choy cheng' as an expression of gratitude.

The dance is acrobatic in style with the lion seeking to take the payment, which is usually Hanging by a Thread high up.

2012-01-232012Jan23LionDance036.jpg

The dancers are found 'inside' the lion in pairs. Yes, It Takes Two to Tango!

2012-01-232012Jan23LionDance079.jpg

Particularly...when they go picking the payment from up high!

2012-01-232012Jan23LionDance094.jpg

I got lucky for this dance. Usually, I expect one lion...there were two! Looking at the leaves between them, you could definitely say this was The Lion's Share

2012-01-232012Jan23LionDance099.jpg

The Big Buddha Head dancer usually accompanies the lions and encourages them during the dance. Take a look....A face only a Mother could Love

2012-01-232012Jan23LionDance051.jpg

At the end of the dance, firecrackers are set off.....the Asian kind, loud! I wish I was positioned differently to take a picture of the lion's head, which includes a mirror...because there is an awful amount of smoke involved in Asian fireworks. I'm hoping that the weather will be fine on Sunday as I plan to head into the City Chinatown, which will be holding their festivities. Maybe I'll be able to get the shot then...or not. In the meantime....

Into every life, a little rain must fall

In what has been the strangest January in a long time, here in Maine we got a little snow, and then it changed over to rain.

Happy Australia Day on Thursday 26 Jan

This date represents the day that the First Fleet sailed into Sydney and is our version of Foundation Day. For most of us, it just means a public holiday.

Melbourne City Council hosted a range of festivities and I decided to wander in to take a look. Here's what I got.

An Axe to Grind - there was woodchopping exhibitions but I was really only interested in this guy.

Basketcase - for as long as the eye could see, vintage cars and motorcycles lined a number of streets in the gardens.

Some of you may remember that I submitted a picture of James Morrison under the category of Someone Famous for a previous hunt. Well, JM and his band was playing at one of the stages.

I've long been a fan of James Morrison...he's a very talented jazz musician with....
Many Irons in the Fire .... or more appropriately Many Brass to the Lips!

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) have a squadron known as the Roulettes. They were out on Australia Day....

Not enough Room to Swing a Cat They fly in formation at a distance of 3 meters apart and in this shot they are about 70 meters or 200 ft above the ground.
