I was wondering if my teen (DD13) could place a call to our stateroom from the stack letting us know that she is ready to go. I know some of the activities run pretty late and I would feel more comfortable letting her participate if she could call and then we could met her and walk back to the room together.

Hello - my dd was in the stack day and night and night and day!!! she loved IT!! she just said to me "well I didn't need to call you" eheheh -- -so I asked again ...was there a phone there...she said Yea - but we didn't need to call you....

I had my DD and my Dnephew with me (both 14) we had curfews and mandatory dinner..that is all.... we allowed them to come and go when they chose but that they ahd to be with us for dinner each night and the shows as well as shore excursions...other than that - they were free to go to the stack and back but be in bed no later than 2 am - 3 am depending on what activities the Stack was having for the kids.... they were always safe and supervised. When we cruise again - they will both be 17 and the last time for the stack for them....

Ohhhh - sorry - let me also say that you can talk to the leaders in the stack and voice your concern and they will assist you with a plan :)

I was just reading about the 13yr old who was attacked and I thought if we could just walk back with them at night then the young teens wouldn't have to deal with those issues. I don't want to live my life with the "if I only did...." and I know my daughter is looking forward to the stack so I feel this is a happy compromise.

You know - awesome point!! I totally forgot about that...... My DD found many friends all on the same deck as us.... (she is telling me now) and they did a group walk back.... Dnephew made friends of his own and they did that too..... so I am very sure there will be a solution to this.... I know the people running the Stack were great to talk to... my dnephew has an illness that makes him stand out in a crowd - so we went to talk to them --- they said - let us deal with that....we did - and he had the most amazing trip.....
that is kinda why we are going again....first cus I want a cruise - but secondly cus the teens want another!!

I understand your concern, however incidents like this one are truly very few. In DCL's history there have been only two incidents like this one and we really don't know all of the details. The Magic, alone, has had 590 sailings and the Wonder has had even more than that. That's more than 1500 sailings. Multiply that by 2000 passengers per sailing. That makes 3,000,000 passengers with only two incidents.

Bad things can happen anywhere. I feel much safer with my DD walking around the ship alone than I would having her walk around town alone. I think that once you are onboard you will find that you feel safe with your DD walking around alone. On our recent cruises DD15 and DS12 had the freedom to come and go. Their curfew was whatever time their club closed. I felt completely safe with them walking back to the room alone at 1 and 2 in the morning.

DCL is far, far different from other cruise lines. You will not see the drinking and partying that you see on other lines. It is very family-friendly and I have found it to be a completely safe environment for my kids.

One of the reasons that I would let my DD13 attend an activity that ran past 10:30 is because it is on the DCL. I think as parents that it is our responsibility to protect our children while allowing them as much freedom as possible to grow into responsible adults. I know that the chances of something occuring are very small and I do feel fairly comfortable about DD13 being in the stack, but I like to go into new situations with a plan. I think thats why I love Dis boards.

Since 2002 there have been three REPORTED incidents of sexual misconduct aboard Disney ships:

I always wonder about those that are never reported. However, we strolled the decks late at night almost every night of our cruise last week and saw several teens around the ship. I overheard a couple say "Naw my mom thinks I am in the Stack". Twice we also interrupted two young teens engaged in a heavy makeout session on one side of the sports deck.

We honestly didn't feel any more or any less safe on DCL than on other cruise ships.

2 questions?

1- What is this story of a 13 year old being attacked? What ship and when.

2- I know that parents with kids in Ocean Quest and Stack do not get pagers. My 13 yr old is a Type 1 Diabetic. Would they give me one just in case of an emergency, if they need to contact me? Just curious.

Thanks

1. If you click on the link that Amberdaclown put in her post, you will be taken to the reports which all happened on the Disney Wonder. Here is the DIS boards link to the discussion of the incident.

2. I would call DCL and ask if you could get a pager because of your circumstances.

I would suspect that anything that would be considered sexual misconduct is reported. The incidents referred to in your link refer to adults making advances on underage teens. Teen conduct with other teens is another story. I feel DCL really tries to make the cruise a safe place for everyone.

Heavy makeout sessions and teens having what some parents consider excessive freedom happens just as much on land as it does at sea. Personally, I think the same kids who tell their mother or father, "Naw my mom thinks I am in the Stack" are the same ones that use excuses on land.

Just my thoughts...

I agree 100%

As for the original question, I was able to call DD in The Stack on our recent cruisers. I just wanted to get a message to her but they give the phone directly to her. I can't imagine they wouldn't let a teen call their parents from the Stack phone.
