Phone help please!

Here's the situation. I need 1 or 2 very cheap phones. I need one to keep at the house. I would kind of like to send with a kid when they do sports or other activities. The issue is that these phones will be used maybe 3 times per month. We have been using a tracfone for the house but it doesn't leave the house and is ending up to be kind of expensive for the 3 times per month it is used. The phones just need to be able to call and text while away from the wifi in the house. And for the record, the kid that will be taking the phone out and about doesn't actually want a phone. Any suggestions to get a cheaper plan?

I have a spare phone on the UltraMobile PayGo plan - $3 per month for 100 texts and 100 minutes of talk each month. I got the sim card on eBay which was cheaper than getting it direct on UM website. Runs on T-Mobile network so if that is acceptable in your area, then could be an option for you.

Tello appears to have a plan for $5/month that includes 100 minutes of talk and unlimited texts. But there is no data included with the plan.

Mint Mobile or US Mobile I think both have ultra cheap plans for that type of use
