Is there a way to make a phone call from your room and not be charged? I read there is a $.75 charge for calling card and collect calls, as well as local calls.
If your cell doesn't have cheap roaming, get a prepaid calling card from somewhere like WalMart. If you have multiple calls to make, you can usually get more than one out of one access fee if you let the other person hang up first, then press the # key, then dial the next number. Be careful though, some hotels will charge a per minute rate even for a toll-free or calling card call if the call lasts for more than a certain specified period of time.
I always have to do remote work via modem when I'm on the road (hi-speed internet access often isn't sufficient, for security reasons). The worst telephone dance I've ever had to do was at HRH in Orlando, where I was using a toll-free number, but had to disconnect every 10 minutes to avoid the extra charges.
