We recently were on the Magic Eastern cruise and needed to call home while in port to check on my father who was ill. I used a payphone at St. Martin because I thought it would be cheaper than the ship to shore rates.
The calling card we had would not work at any of the payphones anywhere near the port or the drop off for the water taxis. They advertise really cheap rates, but I believe that is only if you deposit coins. I used a regular credit card for my call after the calling card didn't work. My call was less than two minutes because I got the answering machine. When I went to make the second call, I read the fine print. I don't remember exactly what it said but something to the effect that you were charged for using a credit card, an access fee, a connection fee and a per minute fee. I just got the bill yesterday and it cost over $35!!
My advise is if you have to call home on Tuesday, call from the ship or bring lots of change lol!
