My granddaughter will be attending Penn in the fall. We live in south Texas, so we don't need a coat except for one or two days in Jan. What type of coat is best for Philadelphia weather? Is Lands End a good brand to buy? TIA

Yes lands end is good. She will need a true winter coat, it's been very cold here this winter. Other brands to look at are Columbia, Patagonia and ll bean.

Something super warm! It gets cold here, and she will also need a little fleece type coat because the fall and spring can be chilly. I have an LL Bean that I bought 8 years ago and it's been a great coat--still in great shape.

I live in NE Pennsylvania about 2 hours north of Philly. Most of the teenagers around here are wearing North Face Jackets. Maybe that would work for her for the fall and spring.

I love my lands end jacket. It's kept me warm all winter and with this stupid polar vortex there have been many below freezing days and nights in the single digits.

Also pick her up some lands end winter boats. Snow, ice and slush are all normal around here.

Congrats to your granddaughter! As others have said she will need a warm coat, boots, hat and gloves. Last Winter wasn't so bad but this Winter has been awful cold and snowy :( Good Luck to her :)

I don't think dd17 would want a lands end coat (and she is fine with Target). It kind of screams old lady (and I live my lands end jackets). She wears North Face. We live 1 1/2 from Philadelphia (right outside NYC - same weather).

Also from the Philly area - I agree North Face or Columbia may be "younger" brands. You can even get decent winter coats here at Old Navy (depending on her style). Definitely get some sort of snow boat and even those rain boots. She can always pick up hats and gloves around the city or on line. So exciting Penn is a great school.

I have to agree about North Face, it's pretty much the dress code around here for teens and college age. You may be able to find it on sale near the end of the winter. Macys includes it for their coupons which many stores do not. She will need a warm winter coat although many kids just wear the fleece most of the time. For boots many girls wear riding boots (or similar) with liners.

I'm a grad student at Penn and I work there. It's a great place!

It's COLD this winter and it's even colder in the city than it is in the surrounding areas. The tall buildings create these weird wind tunnels so it's very windy in certain areas and absolutely freezing. Most people have been running from building to building in the past couple of weeks.

I haven't noticed any particular coat trends amongst the undergrads. All the ladies (of all ages) wear Uggs pretty much all winter but the coat are varied.

Lands End is decent and they rate their coats by temperature which helps. Eastern Mt Sports is pretty popular and more sporty. Places like Urban Outfitters has stuff that is more trendy depending on her style. Now is probably a great time to get something for next year while all the sales are running.

Good luck to her next year- I'm sure she'll love it!

Really? All the grad students in my internship, love Lands end. Most of them say because there warm and they come in great colors. I asked them after this question and all (6) said either North face or lands ends.

LOL actually they said, North face if some one else is paying, lands end if it's coming out of their checks.
