PG13 Movies at School -- DS is 9

We're in Ontario also in the GTA. We're in English Public School as well.

Wow... really? I would have thought a school board in Toronto would have French instruction starting in kindergarten.

I'm not in the GTA. :goodvibes And it's always amazing to me how much difference there is from one school board to the next.

It's a lot easier to teach a second language to young kids, than it is to teach it to older kids.

Nope- it was class time---teacher graded papers etc during that time--the entire grade did it- they rotated classrooms each week. If a kid had work to make up he went to one room and if they had a test to make up they went to another--the rest of the kids watched a movie.

Totally unacceptable.

Can I ask if they were curriculum related? Like Charlotte's Web after the class did a unit study on the book in reading? Or Selma Lord Selma during a unit on the Civil Rights Movement, or perhaps the Magic School Bus or Bill Nye at the appropriate time?

I know, I'm dreaming, but I can hope.

But I thought teachers graded homework for hours at home every night. :lmao:

The movie wouldn't have bothered me. If my daughter were to watch something I think she is too young for I would just ask her does she have any questions about it. I would also make clear what is/isn't acceptable behavior (swearing, etc).

My daughter is in public school and I have never received a permission slip for a movie. It doesn't seem like they watch many anyway.

I don't have a problem with them showing a PG 13. I don't follow the ages very much at all, my kids have seen everything including R's at young ages.

I remember having to sign something for my DD in lit to see a R rated movie.

I also don't see anything wrong with on the Friday afternoon before a break having a fun afternoon !

Except that it is a waste of taxpayer education money.

Would it be better to spend the time and effort introducing new material on the Friday before spring break, then having the kids go home for 10 days and forget everything and have to repeat it over the day after break?

Grades close right before our spring break for the quarter, the test on that material has already been given. Doesn't seem like a smart thing to start something new at that point.

You can always review and reinforce material already covered.

I think we're kidding ourselves if we think that every single moment our children are at school is fully instructional / educational.

Also, when we send our children to school, we are in essence asking the school to take our place as parents. Sometimes we have to take the good with the bad.

There is a point, however when the school oversteps its power to make decisions for our children. I would have to agree that showing PG-13 rated movies to this age group is probably overstepping (although it's unclear what was the rating on this movie).

I think talking to the teacher was the right thing to do, but I wouldn't go balistic about it. My kids probably see worse than that on the school bus every day.

Oh for goodness sake! I am one of the first to say too much of public education time is wasted on non essential junk but for heavens sake what kind of a Scrooge are you that the last afternoon before a vacation an hour and a half can't be spent on something fun?

You never have small talk at the office?, there is never donuts and coffee before a meeting? You never look at you personal email at work, take a personal call, wrap up and not start anything too hard the afternoon before you go on vacation?

Even in the dark ages of the 60's we would watch a film or film strip or play games the last hour before vacation. Please don't try to tell me you never had a party or watched a film in elementary school because I won't believe you!

I would have easily given permission for a child to watch that movie but I agree their should have been a permission slip.

My school also before breaks did have an afternoon where we ended up watching movies or playing games in most classes so that those that needed to make up assignments good and the teachers could get their grades out on time. Most of the time they were closer to the curriculum though (Like my Spanish class in middle school once watched Beauty and the Beast but in Spanish or another time when our teacher was caught up we had a class party with Spanish foods (this was before most of the really bad alergy issues stopped schools from doing home cooked foods in classes)

LOL--noooo----whichever kid got the most stickers that week got to bring in a dvd from home if they wanted to for everyone to watch - the teacher did get final say though like you couldn't have a barbie movie or the hulk--had to be unisex.
