Is there such a thing as stretching or icing too much?

I am starting to get a bit panicked that my PF will not be gone by January and I wanted to pump up at least the stretching part....can't ice at work.

Is there any problems with that???

Thank you

Kim

Kimmer have you been to a Ciropractor or PT? Sounds like you need a consult to get a treatment plan. It's gone on to long and your not any better so if your going to be healed by January you need some help.

 I don't have experience with PF but I do know that there are some injuries you shouldn't be stretching. With my recent Achilles/soleus pull, I was told not to stretch. I agree with Dave that you should go and see a PT or chiro - see if you can find one that practices ART. Send me a PM if you want the name of my PT. I know it's a little far from you though.

And icing, I think it is possible to ice too much at once and freeze the skin. At work, we have a freezer so I stick my ice pack in there. Then I'll put them on and keep them using elastics or long velcro straps ;)

Hope things heal quickly for you! I know the feeling when you're missing training or can't train the way you want.

Kim - I second Vicky's recommendation on a chiro who practices ART. That, and a combination of a couple of months rest, finally solved my problem, but I ran with PF for over a year. I could get through the run okay, but as soon as I stopped the pain would be almost unbearable! Since you don't have time for the rest (I only stopped because I was dealing with IT band and other problems too), I'd strongly suggest the ART.

Thanks everyone, I seen my family dr awhile ago and he just said stretch it....unfortunatley with everyone with the flu, I wouldn't go anywhere near a DR's office unless i was extremely sick so I guess I will just keep doing what I am doing and if I have to tylonel up to get through it then that is what I will have to do.

Thanks for all the input
Kim

I'm not sure your GP doc will have the info you need for your treatment. If you can find a specialist who would understand the issues better I'd feel more comfortable with that recommendation. If it has been going on long and nothing is easing it is time for a consult. Now you have some specific questions about duration of stretching, icing, etc. Make a list and take it with you.

Roll your foot on a golf ball as much as possible.

Do a youtube search for Plantiar Faciitis massage.

in answer to the original q

Yes you can over stretch! Sounds like its been a while since you have seen a doc or rather a doc has seen you foot. I agree with the specialist route (keeps you away from the flu, also). I am not a podiatrist fan and that is where most PF sufferes head first. Most PF sufferes have other issues that contribute to the symptoms. I think you need a ticket to a good PT with a sports oriented outlook. That may not be available in your area but that is the ideal person. Next would be a PT or you may want to consider the chiro/massage route. Finally, this is wierd coming from me but I have seen good results from an accupuncture routine (not to me but a coworker who suffered with PF for 4 years).

Absent a trip to the doc or PT, the rolling exercises will help alleviate the symptoms, maybe. Again, it depends on the root cause of the issue.

Good luck in your treatment.

I had it really bad to the point of almost crying.I went to a running store- New Balance actually and he said try an insert- I put it in my shoe and my pain was instantly gone. This was after the whole stretching, icing deal which in my opinion did nothing.I swear by them and switch them in and out of my shoes.I work with an anesthesiologist who told me about his pain, I said you have PF get an insert from a running store- his pain is gone.

Give this a try let me know how it goes.PM me.
