Petrol in a diesiel engine - is it really bad???

I am officially number one idiot I have only filled my diesiel car with petrol and then because i didnt realise and needed to desperatly get kids to school i insisted on driving a car that was clearing screaming at me not too !!
Thick black smoke filling the street behind me wasnt enough to make me pul over the fact that the car was shaking like mad and needed revs to keep driving wasnt enough to make me pull over eventually i took it to the garage *** the smell was making me heave
I am a proper woman driver if its still going its fine is my mantra and it was cold this morning ( thats what im saying to dh when he gets in !!!)
So guys please tell em that ive not completly screwed my car - *** i dont think i take anything else going wrong at the mo !!!
Oh and any advice how to break it gently to dh that he is married to a div ????

Your lucky you made it to the station.
They will drain the petro from the tank and hopefully it didn't hurt the engine.

I can see it happening, we used to drive a diesel truck, and I always had to think and make sure, I pulled up to the diesel dispenser at the station.


My advice-act calm & rational, don't start screaming or crying and try to be really sincere. It sort of throws them off.

hubby filled my car with petrol realised his mistake then stuck about £ 15 worth of diesel in lucky for him it didnt wreck the car .

Did it to mine years ago. DD filled it up with petrol without realising whilst I queued to pay. Drove a little way, it started to judder and then cut out. Called the garage, who came and towed me away. Had to have the engine drained but fortunately it didn't damage anything except my credit card..

DH did this the day we got back off holiday. TBH, I'm surprised you got as far as you did. We only managed to pull out of Chieveley Services and onto the roundabout before ours died - NOT what you need when you're all tired and cold after a 9 hour flight and no sleep

What they will do is drain the tank and flush through, then put some diesel in to tide you over. They will recommend that you put at least £30 worth of diesel in straight away and will warn you that sometimes it can have caused permanent damage.

It was an expensie lesson to learn, though - cost just shy of £250. We were lucky the tow fee was covered by the RAC.

i didnt give my car any choice but to keep going the bloke at the garage said he admires my detrmination to keep a car running I was in such a foul mood after been up half the night with keira that there was no way i was going to let the car win !!

£250 that is an expensive lesson to learn and then you ahve to buy fuel all over again as well !! Well guess ill be more careful in future when i fill the car up !!

I have my car back im £140 worse off than i was this morning but hey no lasting damage and ive learnt to think more about the fuel i put in than the chocolate im gonna buy in the shop

I constantly worry about this as I drive a diesel too. You would think that they would make different size nozzles to make it impossible to make a mistake. I think it does more damage if you put diesel in a petrol engine, or have I got that wrong?

I think youre right because the garage said the same thing but its impossible to put diesiel into a petrol engine apparently because the nozzle wont fit !!
Im sure at some point im bound to do the same thing again - *** i am that dozy but fro now im just pleased to have my car back !!

I have done this too when I was 7 mths pregnant. I was lucky I was driving DH's car and I only put in £10 worth to get me home, I just could not understand why the car stopped! A friend came and towed me to the the garage and I just filled it with Diesel and it was fine after a while LOL

I once started to do it, we have a petrol car and diesel van, I fill them both, doesn't sound too difficult but I have to really think which nozzle is required.
I got about 1 gallon in and realized I was using wrong one, swapped and filled with no problems thankfully.
