Petitioning high school for PE exemption... anyone done it?

I've never heard of being exempt from PE because of playing outside sports. I do not think that is an option where we live. On the surface, I am not against the idea. I don't think every athlete would try to be exempt. It's my experience, that most of the athletic kids I know love PE. I think it would be great, though, for those that did want the exemption. It would free up a class period for another subject or a much-needed study hall (to get school work done in school and free up the evening for their sport).

As an aside...my daugher was on the 5th/6th grade swim team last year. During the swim unit of PE, she was absent one day. She had to go in to school early to make up the PE swim class. I did want to say to the PE teacher/school, "Seriously!? She swims 4 days a week for the school swim team!! That's not enough to cover her make-up?"

I coach gymnastics. Here we have off-campus P.E. If you train 10 or more hours a week you can take an extra class or a study hall. If you train 15 hours or more you can either miss first or last period. I fill out the forms for my team gymnasts at the beginning of the year and I send in their grades every 6 weeks.

Some school districts only allow Olympic sports others will allow dance or any sport.

Many schools will grant a pass for double sport athletes. Ours does and we just toured a private school that does as well. Check it out. Seems her time would be better spent in academics. They also have a summer school PE course offerred here.

Actually, I see it more as if my child is taking Calculus at the local community college, then why does she have to take it in HS this year.

Most school systems have a Post Secondary opportunity program that would allow the Calculus in college to count toward high school graduation and also earn college credit.

I would love to do this!

My DD dances 3+ hours a week and by HS I can see her spending even more hours! She also loves Ice Skating and other activities. I know our HS allowed this back in the day.

Yes, I know. Which is why I'm all for PE exemptions for athletes (and marching band too):thumbsup2
