I'm catching up on the podcast and heard Pete's Grand Californian rant this morning and thought I would add my experiences. My sister and I stayed at the GC last year before the Disneyland Half. We were on the Concierge level, which I mention because it makes what happened even weirder. There were two strange occurrances.

1. My sister and I were getting ready to check out and were walking down the hall towards the elevators (on the Concierge floor). There must have been a shift change, because a group of about 15 CMs were coming towards us. Even though we had bags and were guests, they didn't move and we had to squash into single file against the wall to get out of their way.

2. My sister, her daughters and I got into an elevator and a CM got on after us. Right in front of my niece's face, she sprayed polish onto the button plate and started cleaning. We pulled my niece back and she was fine, but the chemicals triggered an asthma attack for me. I've never been in an elevator that was being cleaned, but I have been told to wait for another car, because the one I was going to be used was being cleaned, which is what I would have expected at GC.

This year, we're staying at the Disneyland Hotel (hopefully in a renovated room!). We love Storyteller's buffet (for the raisin-free bread pudding with caramel sauce), but we don't have to stay the night in the hotel to get that perk!

A quick note on Kevin's Portobello review - I was at a restaurant in the DC metro area this weekend and my friend's scrambled eggs were undercooked, though she'd asked the waiter to tell the chef that she liked them to be dry, not runny at all. Someone else delivered the food, but no-one came to ask how everything was. I had completely finished my meal and she was just picking at the potatoes when the waiter finally came by to ask about it. She told him that the eggs were undercooked and he offered to get more. She declined, saying she'd eaten enough and he said he'd send over the manager. The manager came over and again offered fresh eggs. My friend declined again and pointed out that if the waiter hadn't waited so long to ask how our meal was, the situation would have been resolved. Her meal was comped and our waiter came back and apologized again (too many times, really). There are places out there that recognize that service and quality are important; however, I agree that comping an entire $200+ meal to compensate for lukewarm mashed potatoes and bitter garlic sounds like they recognized your voices.

As always, I love the show!! Thank you so much for everything!!

I hate this, so much so that if I see someone walking towards me with no intent on moving around or if I have no room to move I just stop - if they keep on going they're the ones who bump into me! But for CM's to do that on stage is not acceptable, did they even say sorry or thank you for moving over?

No, they were just chatting amongst themselves and they did have room to step aside. There was a seating area to the right of us, but the elevator was to the left and walking past them from the right would have blocked us at the Concierge Lounge CM's desk, plus, we had our bags (mine was slung over my right shoulder). They saw us coming and didn't even stop chatting to smile or say good morning, which is the norm for Disney, in my experience. I've had better treatment from resort CMs at the Value resorts (which I love) at WDW than I have from GC CMs, though the Concierge Lounge CMs were wonderful!

I didn't want to start a thread on this but since you did, I'll get on the buzz train :rotfl:

My experience in April with bell services at the GC was similar to Pete's. It took 5 phone calls and 2 visits to the bell desk over 18 uneasy hours to have my pkg delivered to my room. One CM would just say he couldn't find the large and distinctive pkg :scared1: I had to talk to someone higher up at such a time, like 6am. I would call when told to and then I'd get the same story to speak to someone else at another time. :headache: To add to the incompetency, during all this, they said they would not deliver it to my room unless I was there to receive it and they would not deliver after 5pm. :faint:

Especially frustrating as the pkg was extremely special :rolleyes1 and I had phoned in advance to find out the best way to have it addressed before I couriered it, and called to confirm its arrival and how I should go about retrieving it. They reassured me they did this all the time, everything would be easy.

I cannot believe a hotel with conference services could be so poorly run/have so few processes in place. :sad2:

GC is an amazing artisan hotel, but the front desk and bell services experiences I had will keep me from staying there again. :snooty:

cheers,
:flower3:

Similar experiences here too:

In September, I had Costco deliver 2 cases of water to GCH. Bell Services told me it had not been delivered. Costco said it was. Next day Bell Services again said it was not delivered. Another call to Costco. This time Costco provided the name of the CM who signed for delivery. I relate this info to Bell Services. Later that day my water showed up.

Same visit. Fed Ex delivers an overnight box so that I can ship my laptop to the San Francisco area. Tracking shows it is at hotel. Bell Services says it is not. A day later the box is still MIA. Company ships me another box. Next day we come back to the room and pick up phone message that my 2 boxes are at Bell Services.

To their credit, when we returned in April my Costco water was waiting for me when we checked in.

We have never used Bell Services at GCH, but I have to weigh in that we have stayed at GCH many times and have always have really great experiences. Service has been terrific and people have gone out of their way to help us. Lest anyone read this thread and think it is all bad :)

I always try to remember Kevin's dining review disclaimer...each experience is what a given person/group encountered on a given day, your mileage may vary :thumbsup2

Glad to hear the experience is not unanimous! We're heading there in September for a week for our first visit to DL.

It's a lovely hotel and I'm hoping to take the tour someday, but the service left a little to be desired. If you can, try to eat at Storyteller's. I've only eaten at the buffet, but I really enjoyed it, especially the bread pudding dessert! If you have kids, they might like the make-your-own pizza.

We've had a lot of experience with the Grand. A lot. Because of that, I'm also writing this as unbiased as possible. We were married there in 2001, spent at least 1-2 separate occasions overnight there a year (thanks DVC points), and stayed there 2 weekends ago.

Our experience with general bell services has been decent, but frankly, it has been what the average guest does. We always arrive early, so we leave a cart of bags with them, and have never had anything lost and the luggage always comes to our room quickly. We've never had special requests - except to maybe grab something out early or add another bag to our cart before it is delivered when our room is ready.

We've also had some really great housekeepers - just keep in mind that you WILL experience a language barrier with many of them, unless you have a good command of the Spanish language. That communication barrier can be taken as being rude, aloof, or cold. They are very warm and understanding when your child pukes in their bed at 2am....

Our only issue this last trip was that they didn't have the DVC World of Color Viewing Platform open and it took 3 or 4 calls to get it unlocked for us for the 10:15pm show. They were very apologetic, though and we did get to see the show in time. Fountains are amazing from there, but the projections - not so great.

In general, we've never had any issues as a basic overnight guest. YMMV.

Yeah, while she was getting it opened I was plummeting down ToT and then raced to the Grand in time for the show. Gotta love how close everything is in DL!! :)

I think that's why the Disneyland fireworks aren't as impressive/grand as the fireworks at WDW are (another Pete comment, though not a rant). My sister lives in Irvine and can hear them from there on a clear night. I imagine the Anaheim locals would go nuts if the show were bigger and/or longer. I can't wait to see World of Color when I'm there for the Disneyland Half Marathon!

I'll be there for the half marathon, as well. I'm doing the 5k. Send me a PM to meet up and say hi! I know there will probably be a WISH meet at some point. If I see you wearing DIS or WISH stuff during the Race, I'll cheer for you as you go by!

I respectfully disagree with Pete's take on the fireworks. I thought that they were truly, forgive the pun, magical. Seeing Dumbo fly brought tears to my eyes. Tink was awesome as well. I really enjoyed the show and felt it was just different, not better nor worse than Wishes. :thumbsup2

I haven't seen the fireworks at Disneyland yet, because I'm usually there for the race and am in bed by then (or at my sister's in Irvine). Dumbo?! Dumbo?!?!?! I'm so glad I'm going early this year so I can see them!!

I thought Pete's comment was related to the size and scope of the fireworks (rather than the content and appeal).

Not to mention taking a grand tour of GC just to find the viewing deck for WOC.

I too liked Magical, because of how intimate it is. WDW has alway, in my opinion, has had bigger and better things. You just cannot simply compete with the fact that Walt opened Disneyland Park, which makes it so worth while visiting.

Storyteller's was a good breakfast, Nikki, turned me on to biscuits and gravy there. Although, the biscuits were a little dry. I loved all the characters that came to meet us, yes, even the filler characters were there. You gotta love Chip & Dale- thanks Nikki for clarifying who was who.

See, I don't really get the enthusiasm for walt's physical presence. I'm a fan, but after all, he's not there now. To me, the parks have to stand on their own merits - fortunately, I expect they will :thumbsup2

I think what they mean by saying that "Walt walked there" is the fan way of saying that there is "nothing that can compete" with the higher level of attention to detail.

You can see it in the park and building design. It's obvious that the original designer took painstaking time to really notice the small details and how they meshed with the architecture and surroundings. Since the spaces are close, those detail points and the blending of features are critical to the impact of the environment. The transition zones between Adventureland and Frontierland and that of Adventureland and New Orleans Square are good examples. Also, that detail is so evident in the 2-story Jungle Cruise queue, the Autopia, Big Thunder - where they re-used buildings from Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland, etc.

That tradition has been carried through today, where they try to keep that level of detail up, whenever they renovate DL Park or expand it. The Fantasyland renovation in 1983 was a prime example of that continuance - tons of attention to detail, as it will continue to have with the addition of Rapunzel's meet and greet. http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/bl...l-meet-and-greet-location-at-disneyland-park/

I think that's what they mean when they say "Walt walked here"....

That's a very thoughtful post, thanks! As an urban planner, I'll be on the look out for such subtle design distinctions :3dglasses

Thank you, Nancy! That is exactly what I meant.

I just feel that Disneyland has a lot more significance because of it being Walt's "baby". That's not to draw attention away from Roy who oversaw WDW and opened it in memory of his brother. I understand that those were Walt's dreams and ideas as well, but Walt was in Disneyland and being albe to walk where he walked is something that I hold lose to my heart and will remember this trip for the rest of my life and all the people who were present who made that trip that much more memorable.

gkrykewy- they definitely live up to their expectations.Enjoy!
