Pet Owners - Do you board your pet when you vacation?

We have 2 dogs and 2 cats and we board the dogs when we travel. We leave lots of food and water for the cats and my mom comes to check on them and clean the litter box about every other day. As for the dogs, we take them to a great new brightly lit indoor kennel that has great employees. The kennels are large and they have an outdoor fenced in playground in the back. I don't think my dogs like it much(a 7 yo German Shepherd and a 16yo Maltese) but I know they are being taken care of and fed well...they even cook the dogs hamburger and rice sometimes! They know exactly who my dogs are and love them. I'm glad this kennel opened up, because our only other alternative close by was an outdoor kennel(attached to an indoor building) that is so dark and dreary and in a small wooded area next to the owner's home. The owner is not a friendly person either. It's important to me to have a nice, happy place for them to go and I know they do well there.

Our neighbor always looks after our cats, and we feed his cat and fish (outdoor in a pond) when they're away. They went away for a few days last week, and we watched their dog for the first time. She did just fine, so when they go to Hawaii later this year, we'll probably keep her again.

We share yards, so the dog considers us part of her "pack." Their previous dog didn't do very well. The one time I watched her, she chewed a hole in my door! It was back to "puppy camp" for her.

Our neighbor comes over and watches our cats. They hate car trips and changes of environment are really stressful for cats. They much prefer to be in their own surroundings. Plus the boarding at the vets office is very depressing--just metal cages in a cinderblock room with one window. It's like kitty prison!

The neighbor cleans their box, feeds them, and tops off their water fountain. It doesn't take her more than a few minutes a day, and the kitties seem to be no worse for wear when we get home.

We used to just barter--I'd watch her kids and she'd kitty-sit. But we've been traveling a lot this past year, so in thanks for her help we gave her and her parents rooms at BCV for this June. I don't know who's more excited for their trip--me or them!
