Have to agree with PP's in what is good for the comfort of the pet and our financial well being.
Wow! $10,000! Have to admit that I wouldn't have done that! (Putting on my flame suit now.)
No flames from me. We don't exactly have a ceiling on what we will spend, but when it starts cutting out other things in our lives, like food, the kids' activities, or transportation costs we have to set a limit.
My dog Minky was very sickly as a pup. Very sick. He spent about 5 weeks in intensive care. One day DH asked me how much all this was costing. I told him "you don't want to know." Well, he DID want to know and when he found out he wasn't happy. At that point DH was ready to cut off my credit card. I spoke to the vet about it and he agreed that we probably didn't want to treat this dog endlessly and if he didn't turn around soon it probably would be a good idea to let him go. Well, the pup was listening because he immediately started getting better.
Minky is 10 now, a senior citizen. He takes seizure meds and eats special food, which DH isn't crazy about. But he acknowledges that it's the right thing to do. We spend about $1400/year on vet and grooming bills. A lot of money, but it's in the budget. If I was faced with $10,000 in vet bills I would definitely be rethinking things. My purse is not bottomless. For my kids, I would mortgage my house if I had to . But for my pets, I would not.
