Pet Lovers: Stitches are out...Post 101

Herbie you are a cutie!!! I'm so glad he is getting better everyday. What a handsome boy!

What a cute little guy! :goodvibes Hi Herbie! Don't worry Buddy, you won't have to wear that lampshade forever! :cat:

Awww! He's adorable :goodvibes That collar is bringing back some memories around here :rotfl2: Has he gotten any more used to it?

Ahhhhhh  he's a lovely boy! :paw:

Awww, he's cute! So glad he's getting better! :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes

Thank you for the adorable photos of Herbie, it's nice to be able to put a face with the name! He looks like he is doing so well now and ready to get into a little trouble!! The name is very fitting also!!

Herbie is the same color as my kitty Kaede! I'm glad he's feeling better :).

Thank you everyone. I think he is pretty cute too :) The thing that drawn me to him his is purr. He purrs so loud and hard his whole body will shake. He is also a little lover and loves to rub his face against yours.

Yes, he is kind of getting use to the collar. I think he is now just putting up with it. I know he will be one happy kitty to have that off on the 23rd!

I had him roaming around through the house yesterday. My other cat looked him like "what the heck is that on your head and don't put one on me?" :rotfl:
But Herbie is too much of a kitten and really tried to climb. The problem was he would try and his collar would bump and he would fall down, so we decided not to have him out of his room for a while. He is safe in there until those stitches get out. Of course we 'visit' him often, but I do feel bad to have him in there all the time.
He doesn't realize he needs to be careful, he just wants to play like a normal kitten.

Poor Herbie...those collars are tough to get used to, especially for an active kitten! Our cat is a bump on a log at least, so he just sat there with his collar on and didn't try to move around much.

How is Herbie doing with his healing? Did the vet tell you to put vaseline around the site of the urethrostomy? Ours told us that after we brought him back in because he was looking red a week post-surgery. Apparently it's to prevent urine scald :confused3 We haven't had to put it on too much since he got the collar off, though.

Herbie is really starting to become active like he was before the surgery. I suppose that is a good sign and means he is almost back to 100% but he keeps banging into things with that collar on.

If all goes right this Wednesday he will get his stitches out, it will be day 13. I believe he will be able to say good-bye to his collar at the same time?
We had to switch antibodtics because the other one was giving him diarrhea.

I had Herbie into the vet's this past Thursday because he was getting really red down there and I thought it was infected. Turns out that it was just red from the urine. The vets at the emergency hospital didn't tell me to put vaseline around it. Oh well, it is looking a lot better now.

ChrissyK, when did your cat's scab fall off? I know your kitty had a little bit different surgery then Herbie, but Herbie has a big scab and that is where a lot of the stitches are. I keep wondering how they are going to get those stitches out without pulling the scab off!

Thanks for asking how Herbie is. So hard to believe just one week ago tonight was his first night back home after his surgery!

Interesting...at a week out, we went through the EXACT same things, from the antibiotic diarrhea to the urine scald. Our surgeon didn't tell us to put the vaseline on until we brought him back in a week later looking all red down there either

The scabs on the stitches came off with the stitches themselves. Those scabs were small, though. The 2 larger scabs from self-traumatizing just came off this past week, so 3 weeks after the surgery. We're not doing the vaseline every day anymore, but we do have to do it a couple of times a week when we catch him spending too much time cleaning the urethrostomy site. BTW, he became a lot less interested in self-traumatizing when the collar came off. I have no idea why this is, but I'm relieved.

Which antibiotic did they switch him to? Our guy was on Clavimox, which gave him the diarrhea. They switched him to Amoxil for 7 days, and he was OK on that one. This is probably TMI, but our cat got constipated for about 4-5 days after we stopped the Clavimox. I solved it by giving him Spot's Stew 1 meal a day for fiber. I didn't want him straining and popping a stitch!

Herbie was on Clavimox too and it gave him diarrhea. He is currently on Amoxil but now I am wondering if it is upseting his tummy because he throw up a little last night. Of course I am worried, but since he is still peeing I am not trying to worry too much.

The vet said the diarrhea might take a few days to stop. He just stopped the Clavimox on Thursday night and he still has the diarrhea, though not as bad. Sorry if that is TMI ;)

I told Herbie he needs to stop worrying me, he's giving me gray hair!!!

We stopped the Clavimox for like 4 days and then started the Amoxil. The diarrhea went on for about 2 days after we stopped the Clavimox, and then he got constipated for like 4-5 days after that. The Amoxil didn't upset his stomach. Would it be possible for the vet to allow Herbie a break of a couple of days to get rid of the diarrhea and then restart the Amoxil?

Maybe Herbie threw up because of a change in diet? We started feeding ours all wet food since the surgery (so he'll pee more). He's only vomited once, and that was my fault (I overfed him).

The vet did say I could stop the Amoxil since he has been on antibodtics for 10 days now. I am just worried about stopping it but we are going to give him at least a break and then I will talk to them again early next week. Only bad thing is Herbie's regular vet, who I adore is out of town all this week. Herbie will have to see the other vet in the office to get his stitches out. I haven't seen the other vet but a handful of times so I am a little nervous. I hope they know what they are doing!

Herbie seems OK, his personality is the same. Right now he is playing with a toy mouse he got in the mail from a friend. He hasn't thrown up since but after talking to DH I didn't realize that he had fed Herbie only 3 hrs before I fed him last night so he might have over ate and got sick. I am hoping that is all it was.

I think I will always be extra worried about the little guy! They really are just like kids! :teeth:

I know what you mean about the worrying...I don't worry about our other cat at all, but I worry about our boy all the time. He's had health problems since day 1. Of course, he's was also the first pet I'd ever had, so I was sure that I was doing something wrong. I've been worrying about him for going-on 10 years now :earseek:

If you stop the antibiotics, the diarrhea will probably still go on for a couple of days. I was just worried about the fecal bacteria from the diarrhea getting so close to the incision site, KWIM? At a week out, the incision is probably pretty well-healed, though.

I'm sure that the other vet in the office will be OK taking the stitches out :) I wonder if they'll have to sedate Herbie to take the stitches out. They did have to sedate our cat to do so. If his regular vet had done the stitch removal (instead of the surgeon), then I would have had him do a teeth cleaning while our cat was already under. I hate unnecessary anesthesia, so if our cats have to get put under I try to get their teeth done at the same time.

The vet at the emergency clinic today me that there is a chance Herbie will have to be sedated to remove his stitches. Of course that makes me nervous. I too hate anytime my animals have to have anesthesia.

I am going to have to call my local vet clinc and ask about if I should hold off feeding Herbie Wednesday morning just in case they have to sedate him.

I am just so nervous for Wednesday. I don't want that area getting messed up in anyway!
