We adopt Herbie back in September. They guess him to be about 6 months old now. The other day I had him netured. When I got him home I noticed something didn't seem right with his urinating. So I brought him back in and the vet thinks he has a blockage. Here is the latest with my Herbie. I am so worried about the poor guy. We had to put our 13 yr old cat asleep this past January from a brain tumor, we finally were able to move on and adopt another little baby to love and now this...I am very worried!!!!

The vet called this morning. Herbie is doing a little worse from overnight. There is more blood in his urine. I went up to the vet to see and hold him. When they first brought him in he wasn't making a sound, the moment he got in my arms he was purring away! I broke down and cried! It was so good to have him in my arms yet I am so scared too.

The vet is pretty sure there is a blockage. She was able to get some very tiny pieces out but they were very tiny, more like grit of dirt like. She said it is possible that his bladder is full of these tiny grits of pieces they could be irating the bladder causing it to bleed. She also thinks he does have a UTI too, she thinks they are feeding off each other. She doesn't know which came first though.

So the plan is Herbie will be getting an IV to flush his kidneys, they will be putting a cathider (sp?) in him and flush him totally out until his urine is clear again.
She did show me the urine sample they got out this morning and it is very red.
Most likely he will be there until Saturday :( I know he is in the best place but I just want him home.

She said when all this is said and done we will have to talk about a special diet for him.

She thinks he will be OK, although she said there are risks but he is young and for the most part healthy.

PLEASE keep Herbie in your prayers.....I am so scared!!!!

Also if anyone has dealt with blockage or UTI in kittens and has info or questions I should be asking the vet PLEASE send them my way!
I never dealt with this in cats before
THANK YOU!

************UPDATE*******************

The vet just called me. She is having a very difficult time unblocking Herbie.
She is sending him to an emergency animal clinic in the cities and hoping they can help him. She said he may have to have surgery.
I am so scared, I can't go through this again!!!!!!!!!

Oh no, this is sad. Poor thing. Please keep us posted. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Poor Herbie and poor you! {{hugs}} to both of you. I hope he's OK.

Our male cat went through repeatedly this from ages 3-9, and then had an emergency prepubic urethrostomy surgery 2 weeks ago. Please, please, please find an ACVS surgeon in your area and at least get a consult about getting the perineal urethrostomy surgery done. That is the far less aggressive surgery, and it serves to widen the urethra of the male cat that is prone to blockages. You will pay for the cost of the surgery with 1 or 2 avoided trips to the emergency vet.

In my cat's case, no amount of acidifying the food, pushing fluids, catheterization, etc. worked. Right now, he is sitting on the couch with a big Elizabethan collar on, still healing from his surgery. My DH and I are just so happy that he survived and has a good prognosis. We hate what he had to go through during that emergency surgery and what he is going through right now during his recover, though. Things would be SO different for him if we'd been able to find a surgeon to do the perineal urethrostomy back when he was much younger. Trust me...this problem does NOT go away on it's own, and it can kill your cat :(

We've been through the same thing more than once. It is very upsetting. Hope Herbie starts improving soon!

:grouphug: I'll say a special Herbie prayer :paw: . Hang in there. I'm sure it will turn out fine. :wizard:

Aw poor kitty, and poor mommy too! I know how scary it is to have an ill furbaby. Sending good thoughts your way. :grouphug:

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the hospital can pass a catheter so they can do the P.U. surgery on him. It he does need the prepubic urethrostomy because there is already damage to the urethra, please know that it's survivable and often has a favorable outcome. The P.U. is preferable because it's less traumatic, though. Try not to panic...easier said than done, I know. You are getting Herbie into the best hands possible right now, and that is what matters.

I'm so sorry. Sending prayers and :wizard: to help you guys through.

I hope Herbie is doing better. Sending Prayers and PD your way.

I just went through this Labor Day weekend with our male cat, Bob. He had a UTI and was completely blocked, he was very, very sick. He was in the hospital with a catheter for 3 nights, then came home and continued antibiotics for another week or 10 days. He has been on a prescription diet since then, we are using Hill's c/d but your vet may carry a different brand. I also only give him distilled water to drink, my vet said this is especially important if you use well water, we do not but she recommends it anyway. We had his blood work and urine retested about 5-6 weeks later and his results came back great, no blood in urine and his pH is where they would like it and his kidney function level is normal (it was not while he was in the hospital) and no signs of UTI. The vet said it was important for him to eat only his prescription food for atleast a year, but I will give it to him the rest of his life as that was a very scary episode and I will do all I can to avoid it. I also bought one of those electric water fountains, the vet said this will encourage him to drink more as cats like running water. He does seem to drink a little more often. The food is a little expensive but much cheaper than the alternative.

:grouphug: for Herbie to make a speedy recovery.

Poor Herbie and Herbie's owners! I know just how attached one can become to a pet. We've been through very similar issues with our cat. I hope they can get him unblocked and home soon.

Any updates on Herbie's condition this morning? We're thinking about him here :paw:

From one cat lover to another - I hope Herbie is well soon and home. :paw:
