anybody have any experience with pet (dog) insurance? I'm looking into it and am a bit overwhelmed.

For those of you that have it what is your policy like? Are you happy with it?

General thoughts and experiences appreciated! :)

Obviously most people pay in way more than they get out. I had one through Kroger for a while (Pet First???) that was a great deal for two pets. As the years went on, it became less and less of a good deal (price jumped and benefits plunged). I've also used VPI. I find which one is best depends on the number of pets you have and how you plan on using it (for example, some cover some preventative stuff like heartworm medicine and annual shots). Now I just save the monthly fee in my savings account for vet bills.

I'm a vet tech and have seen a variety of policies in use. I really like Embrace. They seem to be the most straight forward. Play with your options (regardless of which company) in regards to deductibles and such. Just remember that with pet insurance, you always pay out of pocket first. Don't go any higher over what you could shell out immediately in an emergency.

You might also check with your company's benefits manager if you have one. Many companies are now offering pet insurance as an add-on and the rates can be less than purchasing an individual policy. My sister works for a pet insurance agency and they are also currently working with some large big box stores to offer policies through those stores to their customers. I guess my point is to check unconventional places to get it- you might find better rates.

I've seen some good reviews for Healthypaws pet insurance.
We use healthy paws for our frenchie. Never had any problems and they reimburse you very quickly. They will even call you to check and make sure the pet is doing fine. I pay $45 month which is not cheap but its a piece of mind in case there is an emergency. We definitely got our money's worth.

I did a lot of research before we adopted our mixed breed puppy last year. Ended up going with Healthy Paws and have been very happy with them.

To give you an idea of cost - it was $34.13 a month for $100 deductible and 90% reimbursement. After one year, the rate went up to $37.18.
