Pet Clothes

How many of you put clothes on your pets. Do you put sweaters on your pets in the winter? I just got back from Pet Smart and I bought my dogs sweaters for the winter. Are they supposed to fit snug or loose. I thought they should fit snug, but DD keeps telling me that they are too tight and should be looser. Anyone else put sweaters on their pets?

I don't know a thing about putting clothes on my pet....she did it herself!!!!

I plan to get Mabel a sweater for the winter. All she has is a Old Navy t-shirt (it is actually a dog shirt) now. I want to start buying clothes for her...

Not sure how they are suppose to fit though...I don't think they should be skin tight...

Actually I do buy lots of clothing for my dogs. All kinds. I was told that sweaters should fit snug, not tight. Should be able to slide a finger up under the sweater without a struggle. If sweater is too loose it tends to catch on objects that dog walks by and could be potentially dangerous.

As you can see from the pic, Petey wears sweaters when it's cold. I've seen wedding gowns, tuxes, pajamas, you name it. I don't get that. If it's raining I do put a rain coat on him but otherwise he's buck nekkid the way he is supposed to be! His sweaters fit snugly but not tight. They should come down to right around the hip bones but not interfere with the "potty area". If pee gets on the under part of the sweater it really stinks. Be sure your sweater is washable. I change Petey's daily.

I love to dress them up, it's so cute and they hate being cold.

I just got a dog that requires a sweater (it's new for me, always had big hearty hairy dogs before) and we are having a really hard time finding anything that fits her. She only weighs 6 pounds and she is has tall thin legs and is very slim in the chest area, so most things we try on her just hang on her chest and belly area. Anyone know of a good place to look with lot's of size choices?

Oh, almost forgot. I'd always had female dogs until this past May when I got my very first male ever. Didn't know there was a "male" sweater and a "female" sweater. Yes! Poor Spider wore my other female dog's hand-me downs and he soaked the front of it! Next time I was in a prissy boutique for dogs I happened to mention what had happened. The shop owner said I had dressed him in the *wrong* thing and gave me "the look". Sorry! Didn't know....had always had female dogs. Well, now Spider has male clothing and doesn't wet the front of his sweaters any more. Am I the only one who didn't know this???

I've never had a dog to even weigh that much. Always have very tiny Toy Poodles and even my new male only weights 3 1/2 pounds. (He *still* wants to take on Petey Joseph!) I pretty much take the dog into the store and just start trying everything on. It's a pain but the only way to do it until you find a *brand* that you know fits. Sizes vary greatly from one brand to the next....same as with people clothes.

Considering Petey weighs in at a hefty 7 pounds I'd put my money on my baby!! He's just on the line between toy and miniature. I agree with epcot, take your dog into the store. I actually got away with it at Target when I got tired of buyng jackets that didn't fit and returning them. But any pet store or specialty store will allow it.

My babes don't get the chance to wear things too often because it's so freakin' hot here, but Harley has been dressed up before - esp in the winter. I put them on pretty snug so they don't get caught on things.

My pug, Tia,

wears one of two sweaters in the winter. She has a vest type one for when it's not super cold and another, much thicker one for when it's really cold. She also has a snuggly flannel thing she wears when she gets a bath and a Coach raincoat!! That was a bit of an accident, actually. I was up at the outlet mall in the Coach store and in the very back was a clearance table. This doggie raincoat was on it and it was only $6!! I thought hey, every dog needs a six-dollar Coach raincoat, right?! She HATES the rain, so as soon as I put it on her she starts sulking. Poor baby.

That reminds me, her vest is getting a bit worn... may have to get her a new one before it gets too cold here.

Yes, we have jackets for all the Chihuahuas. Since Chihuahuas are so small and the short coats have basically no belly fur, it's important to dress them up a little before putting them out in the cold in the winter. If it's below 45 degrees, my babies are in jackets.

Have I ever dressed another dog up? NEVER, but then again, I never had Chihuahuas before. Chihuahuas are such little dears. I never thought that I would like the breed, but Deuce, Beanie, and Perdita have stolen my heart. Maggie

Last winter I had fleeces for my boys, this year I got nice tweed jacketa that velcro around the collar and around the waist. I also put bandannas on them.

fyi pet clothes should be alittle loose to keep good circulation & avoid itching.
we do have a sweater for our dalmation & boxer for winter walks & a santa hat for our ferret.
