We are booked for Peru July 2012. However, I am starting to worry about the altitude. We are a party of 10. Six adults and 4 older kids. I'm most concerned for my parents, 70 and 72. I'm the only one who has researched and the more I read the more hesitant about going I get. Curious for those who have done the trip if it was a major issue affecting your enjoyment. We still have time to switch to another trip. We have considered London/France.....completely different I know. Thoughts?

Please don't let worries about altitude sickness stop you from this trip of a lifetime!

Yes, there is an adjustment, and it is harder on some than others. However, there are ways to prepare - such as upping your water intake and cutting out alcohol the week before you travel. You can also take aspirin and caffeine while you are there, which increases blood flow and helps prevent problems. (obviously, kids under 12 should not take aspirin...)

The guides are wonderful and well-trained to watch for any signs of distress. They carry a portable oxygen unit with them all the time. They also provide plenty of water, which is really the key to avoiding problems.

There were older people on our Peru ABD in 2009 and they were able to choose their level of activity - as is everyone. Even if you have a day where you are feeling a little icky, the guides will still make sure you have a wonderful time.

I'm not sure where you've done your research, but if you haven't yet looked through the trip reports on this board's sticky, I encourage you to do so. Even the folks who had a little altitude sickness were glad they went. As for my family, we took BC powders with us - they are little packets of aspirin and caffeine - and put one in our first drink bottle every day, and one after lunch, and we felt great the whole time.

You will adore this trip - it is so amazing every single minute. Enjoy!

Thank you for your response. Good suggestions. I have read through several trip reports and it did stand out that even with a little sickness all said it was "a trip of a lifetime". I asked my parents to discuss with their doctor as that will put my mind at ease. Now I can just relax and look forward to our trip. :)
