Perspectives on crossing the land border with a positive

Well, I dont know what the right answer is. We have postponed this trip 3 times. We are all triple vaxed and although we didn’t get tested due to Ontario rules, I am confident we have already had Covid. We also will be cautious abs take precautions. We are driving (decided to cancel flights) Our issue is that if anyone tested positive my husband cannot extend his stay. We own a dairy farm and and extending is not an option for us. However quarantine is not a problem. I am able to work from home also and my husband obviously works from home. Due to the nature of farming if we cancel again it will be next fall before we can go again.
i think we will take our chances and if anyone tests positive we will cross the border with a good quarantine plan in place and pray we don’t get fined
You can get a travel PCR test done from a private lab. You have to pay for it and the cost will range from $100-200+. We did this last week before even booking our flight. I went to Mexico in October and did it then too. I realize it can be expensive for a family but there are two things of value. 1...if it's positive and your return to Canada is minimum 11 days after the test you will be able to return to Canada using that positive test for up to 180 days. 2...if it's negative you know that you won't be guaranteed a positive which will delay your trip home.

This is good advice for anyone who thinks they have had covid and wants to travel over the next few months. PCR tests can pick up covid in your system for months after you have recovered. If you recently had covid and travel and need a PCR test to come home, there's a chance you'll still show positive from your infection, and have to deal with whatever fallout happens at the border accordingly. If you can prove you had covid and have recovered, you won't need a new test and you'll be allowed to cross. The PCR in the only lab in our area was $300 (ouch) but for me, it's worth it for the peace of mind.

I truly appreciate everyone’s replies. As of right now, I am leaning towards going (providing cases continue to decline as they have been). Having already endured three postponements, and currently living with the harsh reality that “another time” isn’t guaranteed, I hope this trip will give my kids a break from their worries, if only for a week.

I will purchase travel insurance. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Manulife has specific Covid insurance and to my knowledge they are the only ones with this type of coverage. I bought it and it was $60 for my trip....this was only for Covid related trip interruption. I had to book myself and my DD as individuals because she doesn't meet the definition of a dependant on the policy.. As a family it would have been $40. Funny though....you can book a family policy that includes grandparents but not my 22yo that lives with me and is still partially financially dependant on me.

Well, I’ll be able to report back on how the Manulife Insurance process goes🤦‍♀️ My cousins girlfriend was feeling off today. Took Rapid, positive. Return PCR test was not until tomorrow for Saturday flight. They got her an appt for a PCR test today so that it can be Day 0, so she can fly home a week from Saturday. We all got the Manulife Pandemic Plan.

My cousin is moving to the couch in our timeshare so his GF can be isolated. She thankfully is only missing 2 park days out of 10 day pass. We all took rapids & were negative. (Fully vaxxed, boosted)

Oh no! Not a fun way to end the trip for sure, but great that you were prepared with insurance!
