DH are debating something. Would it be proper to write a thank you note in which you say "I would like to personally thank you for your contribution......." or is it not right to say personally because you aren't thanking them in person?

If you are personally writing the thank you note, then I think it's fine to use the word personally in the note. :)

Hmmm.

Do you even need to say personally? What about "I would like to thank you for your contribution" or just "Thank you for your contribution"?

I took a writing class eons ago and our instructor harped on the class about trying to say something using as few words as possible. It must have not stuck with me because I write long posts! ;)

I learned this in a writing class and I always use this as a rule of thumb when I am writing a letter or thank you.

Write your note or letters like you would if you were having a regular conversation with that person.

My Grandpa always told me "Don't say ' I would like to thank....', just thank them". It's one of those things that has stuck with me.

I think stating it that way is a bit more personal but that would be more if you are doing a speech and want to include a thank you to the person. Or if you are writing a manuscript for a book or article. But when you are sending a thank you note you just need to say something like this:

I would like to thank you for you contribution to.....

because you are already "personally" thanking them by sending a thank you from yourself.

TigH and I must have had the same teacher. I remember a college English instructor that really drilled into our heads to leave out "superfluous" words. (His phrase, btw)

I would just say "Thank you for your contribution to....." and then maybe add another sentence saying why the contribution helped.
