I know I've seen this talked about before on here but can't search for the thread...Do perscription drugs need to be taken in original bottles or not?

I take several different varieties of drugs and use a weekly pill case. Why can't I use this? It will be a big pain to bring all original pill bottles for me and DW. IS this precaution for DCL or airline?

Any experience you have would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've always taken either the original bottle, or a copy of the paperwork from the doctor or pharmacy. I think the idea is to prove that you are legally in possession of a controlled substance. Your refill paperwork from the pharmacy should have your name and the prescription dosage, so it is sufficient. Hope this helps.

Oh, and the protection is actually for you. DCL and the airline don't check. It's just possible that when you go through customs, they could ask for it, if they suspect any drug trafficing (not you personally, just in general).

I don't think it's a precaution for DCL or the airline but rather for you personally. If you happened to be searched and they found all sorts of pills and you had no written prescription for them or evidence of what the pills were and who they were for then they could be confiscated. I know it's a hassle (both my dh and I take prescription drugs) but I'd rather be safe than sorry. HTH

I would copy the labels and/or information on paper and carry it with you - it's a lot less space than carrying all of those bottles. Chances are if you have a weekly pill dispenser you would never be questioned, but to have the backup paperwork would give you a complete sense of ease

We have special needs children, so they have lots of prescriptions. We didn't want to go on board looking like a pharmacy, so we put the medication in two seven-day containers but made sure all of the paperwork was handy. The only scrutiny we got was with the TSA at the Indianapolis Airport. Although they didn't ask for paperwork, we had it ready just the same. I agree with tkd lisa--I don't think DCL really minds, but you don't want to be caught without your paperwork if customs asks.

As I posted before, you can always ask your Pharmacist for a smaller bottle with another lable. I am sure they would be happy to help! Then you can put just a weeks worth in there and still have all the info you need with you. No sense in carrying 30 to 90 days supply with you if you don't need it. We leave Friday and that is how we will do it!

I go with WDWCRAZZY. I have several smaller bottles and I take the labels off the big ones and put on the smaller ones. We do most of our prescriptions by mail order and they only have ONE size bottle - BIG regardless of what size the pills are. It's also a safeguard in case you get delayed for some reason and need an emergency refill. Those things aren't planned - it's life happening while you're making other plans.

This is WDWCrazzyCunninghams DH (a pharmacist) even if you get your scripts mail order in the large bottles go to your nearest pharmacy and ask them for some small bottles to put your pills in. 99% of them won't charge you anything for a couple bottles and caps, If it is your regular pharmacy ask them for duplicate labels for all your current medication, 1) to have as proof if you use a 7-14 day pill container and 2) If you should happen to loose your medication , the info on the labels will help quickly secure replacements from a local pharmacy in florida.Prescriptions can be transfered from any state (except South Carolina) :guilty: to Florida.

I have always put our prescription medications in one of those 7-day containers that has a pocket for each day and carried them on the ship in our carry-on luggage. The day before we leave I fill one for my husband and another for myself. Also include our daily vitamin and my calcium tablets. That way we're both sure we've taken them for each day.

Have a wonderful time.

I am surprised that the pharmacist didn't mention this but by having a print out of the Rx IF you need medical attention while traveling and you have that print out it reduces the chance of drug interactions if a new Rx is required. Also, if you need emergency treatment, it is helpful to the medical professionals to know what medicines you are already on as it may be a reaction to one of the meds. This is all precautionary but being prepared usually means you don't need it .... being unprepared is when it becomes an issue.

My only other thought is carry a few more days pills than you expect to need , you never know when a hurricane or snowstorm or mechanical problems with the car or plane will delay your trip and you don't want to be without your meds.
