Anyone had this done?

Pros Cons?

I was going to get it done at our local salon when I saw it advertised that they had the Japanese perm. When I phoned they said they will sometimes just relax the hair depending on the condition, but still charge $300. Well I used to relax my hair in highschool so I just went back to doing that myself.

Many years ago I had my hair straightened. All they did was use a regular perm solution and instead of using rollers, they just kept running a comb through my hair. It worked. Not sure how it would be done these days. Definitely did not cost me $300. I do agree with the previous poster who said the results depend on the hair. I imagine it is no different than how a curly perm takes.

I got my hair chemically straightened (relaxed?) a couple years ago. It did not work. It just ruined and fried my hair horribly, so I didn't even had pretty curls anymore -- just a bunch of dry frizz.

My friend did the permanent straightening and as her hair grew out it was curly at the roots and straight on the ends. You would have to return often to have the process applied to your roots and that sounds like a nightmare.

I have naturally curly hair and just purchased the CHI straightener and it works wonderfully. It takes me only 15 minutes to do and does not seem to damage my hair like my previous straightener.

Thanks all.
My hairdresser is pretty well versed in straightening, so I would HOPE it would not be damaging.
I am currently using an intense treatment 3 times a week in prep, but I will talk to her more about it before committing.

She said it would last for a year.

My hair is not REAL curly, but enough that I can not just wash it and let it go (not curly enough to be "pretty").

I have to blow dry and THEN straighten. Takes me 45 min as my hair is very thick. I am quite tired of it.

It may last a year on the hair that you have now but the new growth would still be curly. Find out what the cost would be for monthly touch-ups.

I do have a friend that has it done every spring. I know that whatever she has done she cannot mess with her hair for a couple days afterwards so she always goes into hiding for a while. She does it in the spring so that the humidity does not make her hair puffy.

Yes and it fried my hair and didn't work! This was over 10 years ago though so maybe it has gotten better...

I will ask her. She didn't mention monthly touch ups...

Thanks.

I agree with you on the CHI straigteners. They are probably the best ones.
