I am almost 46 and in the early stages of menopause. The symptoms aren't too bad as yet except for one strange thing. I am having the most bizarre dreams! Not really nightmares but very vivid, involved dreams the I recall nearly every night. Is this a general symptom?

DMom had a complete hysterectomy at 52 so she didn't really go through the whole thing so her help is limited.

The other possibility is that I have switched when I take my prozac. I used to take it in the morning but kept forgetting so I started taking it at night with my vitamin and such. Could that be it?

Thanks!

I can't speak concerning the Prozac, but when I started menopause, I did begin having bizarre dreams. It's something that has continued, and I wish would go away! ;)

I had a complete hysterectomy last year at the age of 47. My hormones were in full swing. From the time I got home 2 days later until just a couple of months ago I had these dreams. They were crazy, vivid, and all over the place. No reason to them what so ever. I was telling my DH about one one night ( I fell asleep on the couch and he woke me up to go to bed) and I told him as I was laughing hysterically, that I wasn't making this up. He was also laughing and said, don't worry honey I believe you, no one could make up something that crazy.

They have diminished to some extent, but I had a crazy one last night. The good thing is that they aren't really bad, just insane, I mean really insane.

Yes I had and still do but not as often. They were very intense and not always pleasant dreams! I personally thought that was the worst part of starting menopause. For awhile I had them very often. The good news is after about a year they dropped considerably in frequency and I only have them occasionally now.

I would also wake up after one of them and then not be able to go back to sleep for a long time and end up getting up for awhile. My sleep was really messed up for a time. Then of course throw in there a hot flash for good measure after the dream and when you were trying to go back to sleep!

Chemo forced me into a premature menopause starting 5 years ago. The dreams are less frequent now. I wish the hot flashes were too!

Antidepressants can definitely trigger bizarre, intense dreams. When I was on Effexor my dreams were extreme and very involved. Not nightmares, just very intense. Every night I had to figure out some big problem and it felt like terrible things would happen if i couldn't get it right. Very vivid. Since the doctor changed me to something else, the intensity of the dreams has dialed way back. In fact, now my dreams are very pleasant and when I wake up, I'm rested instead of all anxious and worked up. It might be worth taking your Prozac earlier in the day and see if that helps.

OMG! Yes!
I stated having them when I started taking cymbalta for Pre menopause
depression. I thought it was the Cymbalta! It's been a year and 4 months and I still have them evey night some nights more than one. Mine are usually stressful, not being able to get where I need to be or acomplish a goal. I also foster kittens, so many dreams involve rescueing kittens. I also occasionally have dreams where other people are screwing up my Disney tour planning, but that's real life for me, as all of our family and friends want to go every trip with us.
Maybe we should start a perimenopause dream thread and share them every day.

Yes! I am constantly going somewhere and meeting obstacles, getting lost, turned around and being frustrated that I can't get there! I do have to :lmao: at myself tho, I got a new Droid based phone and downloaded Angry Birds. Well, the other night they showed up in one of my dreams along with the red tulips I planted on my Farmville farm that night! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Thanks All, it is nice to know I am not alone!

Oh yes! My latest weird dream:

I was up in the attic and moved a board on the wall. Behind was a big red button...like you see in the movies to launch a weapon or something.

The sign said, "For Option #2, Press Here"

So I press the button and my house folds down into the ground like a transformer, then up pops this brand new house, decorated to what I guess was top of the line in the 1950s. All shiny chrome and tile in the kitchen, flower boxes on the windows. It was awesome! It was one of those dreams I was sad to wake up :flower3:

Another weird one I was being chased by Christopher Walken, I thought he was trying to hurt me...he grabbed me and put is mouth over mine (not romantic, more like cpr) and this enormous flock (?) of butterflies goes by and they were trying to get in my mouth...so he was actually trying to save me. And of course this took place in the halls of my old high school!:rotfl:

Yes I did have weird dreams during it! I am 47 now and over and done with menopause and the dream do stop after some point...I started peri around 37/38 and let me tell you--- I am LOVING being over and done with all that nonsense every month!

Very interesting. I am 46 also..and still get my monthly each and every month, maybe because I had my last baby at the age of 40..Anyways. Ive been taking a low dose of prozac since the summer, and I always take it at night. I have some very intense dreams as well, and it seems likeI remember them so vividly. I never thought that the prozac could be doing it.They are not nightmares, so that is good..

:sad::sad::sad:

I WISH I was through menopause :lmao:. I don't think I am even in perimenopause yet and I am mid-40's. My luck I won't go through menopause until I am 80.

I never took any anti-depressants and I have had the most bizarre dreams since beginning menopause...over 10 years ago!

At first it really upset me, but now I laugh about them, especially since none of them are scary.

I'm through menopause, and my dreams haven't stopped. Sometimes I halfway dread going to sleep because of the dreams. They generally aren't really terrible, but they're just so involved and stupid. :headache:

I went thru an extremely early menopause (39yrs old) and the dreams were very goofy and I always seem to remember them. For the longest time they all had a similar theme - we were on vacation and it was time to go home and I had hours and hours of packing ahead of me. Or we were somewhere and before I knew it, it was time to go, the party was over kind of thing. I laugh when I think how ironic that is. I am having a hysterectomy next week and am curious to see if this will put an end to my bizarre dreams.

Thank You for starting this thread I thought I was the only one!

Jealous, Jealous, Jealous !!!! I am 48 and just over a year in, hope to get through it soon but I'm still very 'regular'

Often my Mother and oldest sister who have both passed on are in my dreams and occasionally my Gramdmother and BIL, also both deceased. Rarely anyone living. If I'm in a house it's always my childhood home but there are aspects of my currrent life, ie current car, or I'll know that I'm married, I was a teenager in a dream recently and gave a boy my current cell number. After I had been having these for a while I started to realize at some point in the dream that I'm dreaming and can sometimes wake my self up if it get's too intense. For a while I was having black hole dreams where either I was being sucked into darkness or darkness was chasing me much like the dementors from Harry Potter. I lerarned that if I rush toward the blackness or turn and chase the "dementor" it will disipate. I've stopped having those dreams

I'm 48 and having menopause symptoms, and I'm also on an AD.. I have fabulous and entertaining dreams! I dream that I am going to a party, and I open up this huge closet full of fabulous colorful clothes. Or that I am a teen again and someone is desperately in love with me!
they are so entertaining that I love going to sleep at night!

I'm glad you started this thread,I'm a little olderthan most on here..50 and getting 3 sometimes 4 hot flashes per night with heart pounding out of my chest and weird dreams..I'm glad I'm not alone..I'll just be glad when i dont have to deal with all that monthly crap forever. havent gone the whole year yet without one,so its not menopause quite yet. anybody else have really dry itchy skin with this or is that just something else?
