Does anyone know which rides have perfumes in them? Are they usually strong, and has anyone here had allergic reactions?

Perfumes or just scents? Because I wouldn't call the skunk scent on Figment 'perfume'...

Figment has scents, Mickey's Philharmagic has scents, Voyage of the Little Mermaid might (I swear I smell the ocean!) Soarin' does too.

Spaceship earth has that smoke scent,Philharmagic (blown in face) Soarin, Its tough to be a bug (smoke), poss. irritation from the exhaust of of Indy speedway, Beauty and the beast live on stage has smoke effects (should only bother you if in the front) and the same is true if you sit in the front of the great movie ride. Kali river rapids.(floral scent at beginning)

Sorry if I missed/repeated any

It would be perfumes and scents. Both can be bothersome. I would think the scents are synthetic and not hypoallergenic as well as fragrances.

Here is the bad news, sigh, Disney not only uses scents in rides and shows but in shops, parades and other places. They are called smellitzers.

Bugs Life was not that bad for me and is when the stink bug (?) lets out a spray of um, well anyhow he does. I am trying to keep this family friendly, lol.

Some boat rides have a musty smell from the water.

Ellen Universe of Energy, what ever, has musty odours added.
Pirates has a faint burning ember or timber smell and a dirt smell and the line has a old musty disused smell.
Tower of Terror has a boiler room smell.
Merry Christmas Party Parade has gingerbread and cookie smells.
Bakery on Main Street has a cookie smell
Haunted Mansion has a dirt smell.
Confectionary exterior has strong peppermint smell piping out into the sidewalk.
I read that Dinosaur has a smoke smell.
Soarin has an orange scent.
Stitch's Great Escape has a Chili Dog scent but you can avoid that bye holding your breath when you hear the phrase "chili dog" which is when he burps.
Festival of the Lion King had a fire twirling act which sent off smoke.
Spaceship Earth has the smell of smoke piped in during the smouldering town scene.
Honey, I shrunk the Audience has a podium blow up and a bit of smoke into the audience.
The Many Adventures of Winnie of the Pooh has a honey fragrance pumped in as you exit the vehicle to enter the gift shop. The heffalump blows a smoke ring.
Mickey's PhilharmMagic has an apple-pie scent blown in.
Tiki Room has a smoke/fog effect when the Tiki Goddess gets mad.
Beauty and the Beast show has smoke effect.
Indy speedway (autopia) has exhaust fumes from the cars.
Journey into Imagination (Figment) has Smell Lab and skunk scent during the ride.

I get puking ill when I get around certain perfumes and aerosol sprays and have gotten sick on bathroom sprays at home. If you have a major reaction to heavy perfume on people then consider getting a GAC. I rarely have been stuck with perfume hogs and when I run into one I move away or cover my face with my shirt or stand with my back to them.

FYI-Festival of the Lion King also has vents on the floor (near the wheelchair areas) that blows rather thick smoke. Sometimes it lingers close to the floor and makes it hard for me to breathe.

I have a tracheostomy which doesn't filter smells like the nose and can have really bad reactions to scents.

Smoke is usually what does me in and perfume and hairspray.

The scents on Soarin' and Mickey's Philharmagic smell very natural-orange and a baking pie. But Philharmagic would be bad for your son anyway.

Festival of the Lion King the smoke from the twirler is very minimal and never bothered me.

The mists on The Great Movie Ride, Beauty and the Beast, and Festival of the Lion King can be compared to fog. I actually found it soothing.

I never noticed the scent on Tower of Terror or Winnie the Pooh.

Stitch, Honey I Shrunk the Audience, it's tough to be a bug, and Journey Into Your Imagination all have tactile affects that would definitely bother your son and the smells are irritating.

If you sit in the back of the Tiki room you should be okay. It is more mist than smoke.

Don't sit up front on Indiana Jones or Lights, Motors, Action (smoke). Backlot Tour has an explosion pretty close. If you watch fireworks make sure the wind is blowing away from you.

Mechurchlady,

Do you think smells like Ellens with the musty smell or Haunted Mansion with the dirt smell are pumped in fragrances? Or are they the result of the materials being used in the attractions?

I know that the smell in Ellen's Energy Adventure is added to the scenes with audioanimatronic dinosaurs. It is supposed to smell kind of 'swampy'. Having been in swamps, it's pretty realistic.
I don't know about Haunted Mansion. I am allergic to dust and it has never bothered me.

Yes. From what I have read there are natural odours like mustyness in water rides but many smells are piped in. Pirates and the Haunted Mansion have piped in dirt smell. Sue is right about the swamp smell for Ellen's ride. The Haunted Mansion has cob webs added with a special device, lots of it. It really is not dirty as in not cleaned the floor for years because occassionally guests drop or throw things into the ride area.

Many of these piped in scents are just enough to give the attraction an odour but not so much as to be over powering. I am pretty sensitive to some odours and in one local restaurant I had to take a deep breathe and run into the bathroom and run out. Usually I could get out before the third breathe or I started gagging from the aerosol spray used. Undiagnosed, another lol. I have never been affected by any ride smells but usually do not notice them. For Bug's Life I held my breathe each time as I was not going to find out, lol.

I go to disneyland in California. I had a reaction to Soarin'. I was covered in hives and vertigo. Since they redid Pirates it causes the same reaction plus trouble breathing but that could just be construction. I was told by a CM not to go to It's tough to be a Bug because the stink bug effect uses sulfer which triggers my asthma.

I have a VERY sensitive nose (can smell cigarette smoke a million miles away) and the only thing I can recall being so concetrated is the smoke at B&TB and I didn't really notice a smell to it. I can hardly smell many of the smells on the rides, except some other guests. Most of the time, I really have to sniff to smell most of the ones that are piped in, because they are so mild, and some of them I can't smell at all.

if you have problems w. smoke, be careful if you see epcots illumintations because depending on which way the wind is blowing, the fireworks ash can form a huge cloud and head straight toward you.

never noticed a problem w. wishes.

fantasmic, i'm thinking maybe smoke issues can't remember, but i'm remembering a smoke, fog like section. maybe someone can comment more.

If you watch wishes, don't watch in the rose garden as (there are tons of roses), they are always blooming and smelly.

If you have problems with perfume type odors, be aware of Norway and Japan. Norway has a perfume (which I LOVE) that I find to be very distinctive and can be quite strong. Walking through Epcot, I can generally pick out that fragrance above any other -- there must be a lot of people out there like me -- the scent reminds me of WDW and I love to wear it! Some people seem to put on more than others! There is a portion of the shops in Norway that has jewelry and the perfume (Laila) -- I think (if memory serves correctly) that store is after the store with the big troll. I think the big troll store has an exit so you wouldn't have to go through the perfume store. Also, the last time we were there -- Japan had a small area in the department store with several perfumes. I don't remember the scent being overwhelming, but I wanted to give you a heads-up.
There is also a perfume/make-up store in France. That store is pretty easily avoided!
I think there is also an area in one of the Great Britain stores that has a strong floral scent. I can't remember if it is potpourri or perfume....

I have severe scent allergies, carry an epipen. But I have never had a problem at Disney. I do avoid some of the gift shops in EPCOT especially France.

I have to avoid some gift shops in Epcot Norway is by far my worst problem I have to try not to breath and stay all the way to the right as I go by the shop with the perfume when going into the ride

On the way out I take the exit right side of the entrance I open the rope blocking the exit they try to force you to go thru the gift shops and once in a while they tell me I can't go out that way but I tell them I will have an asthma attack if I do

Oh my. It sounds like the chemicals being spit out at people at Disney grew into a much bigger situation than I realized after my last trip there in 2006. Maybe it already was bigger when i was there and was part of why I got sick for a few days.

I see part of this thread is older but I'm seriously worried now about going again. I've been buying "fragrance free" products for years now and it really helps tremendously in cutting down on how many headaches and even migraines I get. I can hardly stand to walk down the aisle with the cleaners in most grocery stores or walk past the stinky candle store at the mall, as the scent is just that strong even out in the mall surrounding the store entrance.

My husband says I'm the canary in the coal mine and I can't blame everyone else who doesn't feel the effects in any obvious way from all these chemicals polluting the air in the places we go. They just don't know, as our experiences or lack there of are such a big influence on us. But still... it drives me nuts wanting to go the happiest place on earth and knowing they are going to intentionally spit chemicals at me around every corner.

Does anyone know if they are doing it more or less now as compared to the 2008 posts about all the places in "the world" where they had been doing this?

Also a DLer. While nothing on Soarin sets me off, this last trip I did feel like the POTC battle scene was harder to breathe through.

I wonder if there's a GAC to cover that?

I wonder if there's a GAC to cover that?
No.
You would just need to tell CMs when there is something that will be a problem. THere is nothing on a GAC that would be that specific.
