I just gave a full on speech to nobody about teaching. I was thinking that if I was a teacher, how I'd be different. Points in the discussion with myself...
- I'm going to trust you guys with a lot this year. I'll explain later, but I just want you guys to know that I'm trusting you with a lot because I understand that you're mature, young adults and not children. I don't expect respect from you guys, if I don't give you respect.
- You may get up and go to the bathroom whenever you please. I understand everyone has to go, and you can't always control the urge. I also understand there's only 4 minutes in between classes and that's not always enough time to go! You're adults, you'll be making a lot of decisions soon and I think I can trust you to know when you need to use the bathroom and not.
- You may bring watter bottles. I know I love having a water bottle next to me at all times, and I also know that I'm a bit of a germaphobe so I don't use the water fountains as I'm sure some of you don't. I want you all to be healthy, and I know that requires to keep being hydrated.
- I'm allowing you to chew gum for the first week. If there's any rule I'm going to enforce this year, is that you MUST spit your gum out in the trashcan before leaving my class. This is because I'm not sure about other teachers policies, so you must spit it out before leaving. Right now, this room has no gum in it, if I find even one peice of gum it will be the end of it. I know I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, but gum is a priviledge. And I hope you guys don't abuse it.
- Most importantly this class is going to be a discussion. I hope to have each one of you completely understand every aspect of history, well as much as I can teach you in this year. I know we won't get to all of it, but I think it's far more important for you guys to actually understand what has happened to this country. You guys can memorize facts all day and not actually absorb anything, I know I remember having to memorize 25 things about the civil war. After about a week I forgot it all, as I'm sure most of you do. So I hope to actually instill in your brain this information about our history. ALSO, this is going to be a discussion. A group of young adults having a discussion about history. I want each of you to feel free to share your opinions, stories and appropriate jokes. Because I know I love a good laugh now and then.
- I'm trusting you guys with a lot, and I hope you won't abuse it. I know I hate it when teachers are intimidating and cold, I don't want to be one of those people. Yes, I hope this class can be fun, carefree and lighthearted but I also want you to know that if necassary, I can and will enforce my power as a teacher. I'm sure this won't happen, because all of you aren't children. You're growing, you're adults, and I know I can trust you to make mature decisions.
- My motto will be 'I don't except respect, if I don't respect you.'
Only if teachers were really like this. Maybe I have too much faith in humanity, but I believe if teachers were actually like this we'd all learn a lot more and have a better time at school. Instead, teachers are mostly intimidating and cold and try to just teach us the minimum to pass state tests. I'm not trying to rag on teachers, mind you. I believe that if teachers respected us, we'd respect them too. Without actually being FORCED to respect them. How about if they made it clear that they respected and trusted their students as young adults, but also made it clear they can enforce their power as a teacher? Yes the idea has kinks, lots probably, but don't you understand the whole concept?
Any comments? Opinions? Discuss please.
