I just gave a full on speech to nobody about teaching. I was thinking that if I was a teacher, how I'd be different. Points in the discussion with myself...

- I'm going to trust you guys with a lot this year. I'll explain later, but I just want you guys to know that I'm trusting you with a lot because I understand that you're mature, young adults and not children. I don't expect respect from you guys, if I don't give you respect.

- You may get up and go to the bathroom whenever you please. I understand everyone has to go, and you can't always control the urge. I also understand there's only 4 minutes in between classes and that's not always enough time to go! You're adults, you'll be making a lot of decisions soon and I think I can trust you to know when you need to use the bathroom and not.

- You may bring watter bottles. I know I love having a water bottle next to me at all times, and I also know that I'm a bit of a germaphobe so I don't use the water fountains as I'm sure some of you don't. I want you all to be healthy, and I know that requires to keep being hydrated.

- I'm allowing you to chew gum for the first week. If there's any rule I'm going to enforce this year, is that you MUST spit your gum out in the trashcan before leaving my class. This is because I'm not sure about other teachers policies, so you must spit it out before leaving. Right now, this room has no gum in it, if I find even one peice of gum it will be the end of it. I know I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, but gum is a priviledge. And I hope you guys don't abuse it.

- Most importantly this class is going to be a discussion. I hope to have each one of you completely understand every aspect of history, well as much as I can teach you in this year. I know we won't get to all of it, but I think it's far more important for you guys to actually understand what has happened to this country. You guys can memorize facts all day and not actually absorb anything, I know I remember having to memorize 25 things about the civil war. After about a week I forgot it all, as I'm sure most of you do. So I hope to actually instill in your brain this information about our history. ALSO, this is going to be a discussion. A group of young adults having a discussion about history. I want each of you to feel free to share your opinions, stories and appropriate jokes. Because I know I love a good laugh now and then.

- I'm trusting you guys with a lot, and I hope you won't abuse it. I know I hate it when teachers are intimidating and cold, I don't want to be one of those people. Yes, I hope this class can be fun, carefree and lighthearted but I also want you to know that if necassary, I can and will enforce my power as a teacher. I'm sure this won't happen, because all of you aren't children. You're growing, you're adults, and I know I can trust you to make mature decisions.

- My motto will be 'I don't except respect, if I don't respect you.'

Only if teachers were really like this. Maybe I have too much faith in humanity, but I believe if teachers were actually like this we'd all learn a lot more and have a better time at school. Instead, teachers are mostly intimidating and cold and try to just teach us the minimum to pass state tests. I'm not trying to rag on teachers, mind you. I believe that if teachers respected us, we'd respect them too. Without actually being FORCED to respect them. How about if they made it clear that they respected and trusted their students as young adults, but also made it clear they can enforce their power as a teacher? Yes the idea has kinks, lots probably, but don't you understand the whole concept?

Any comments? Opinions? Discuss please. :teeth:

Very nice... I agree with most of it. But for the bathroom part, do they have to ask, or can they just get up and go? I can see that backfiring really fast.

Ask first, but I let them go with no questions. I know, it could definitely back-fire because I'm relying on the kids actually being mature. Haha, it's just some thoughts in my head. :)

I.Wish.

I absolutely cant STAND how teachers treat us and the expect respect back.
AND

I love the gum thing.
That is awesome.
Studies have shown that if you chew gum wile working on something that it will get done faster with better results, because your relieving your stress out on the gum.

I also think that,
for bathroom if someone asks then they can go.
I mean..and if a girl says "No you DONT understand sir I REALLY have to go.." and they still say now..that's just ridiculous i mean...seriously. They have NO IDEA, what its like.

I also feel that teachers should be a students friend not enemy and should call the student by his or her first name.
I also think that we should call teachers by their first name too.

I think its really stupid that we have to obey every single little thing teachers order us to do, and when we do that and ask to just simply go to the bathroom then we get the strict "NO MAM'" ...

I am seriously ticked off about schools.
I keep asking my mom and I know shes just saying stuff to
1. Get me to shut up
2. Make sure I don't get the idea to start protesting
3. Make sure I don't get the idea that we should all stop going to school (ex. 2)
4. Just because "its the truth" (what a load of pahtootey...)
5. Because they are the adults and we have no idea what they are going through..

OKAY.
NOW.
HOLD UP.

Yeah, we DONT know what they are going through, but I feel like they keep forgetting what WERE going through...

Even if, I still feel like that's not a reasonable excuse.
When you are a professional teacher that's one of the things that they teach you, is to never get your personal life confused with kids.

My theory is..
WHAT ELSE IS THEIR PERSONAL LIFE!?
I SPEND MORE TIME WITH THEM THEN I DO MY OWN FAMILY AND I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HER/HIM AND THEY KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT US.
IT FREAKS ME OUT.
GAHH

Im about to go overload here.

Im sorry. I started a really off topic conversation. It just bothers me.

Your list ROCKS.

Couldn't agree more. I've always been ticked off at the schooling process. It's a poor concept, IMO and should be revised. Especially for todays generation.

I'm fortunate enough to know a teacher like that. I'll never have him... except in Sunday School. He's great and everything.

He handles his own disipline... doesn't send kids to the office on his choice. Like... one time this kid was chewing in his class. He pulled him out and gave him 2 options "Swallow it, or go to the Principal's". Now, word got around and kids don't chew in is class anymore.

He's great. I love him to death.

I agree Jenny.

I've actually had a teacher that was like this. She was my favorite teacher I've had so far. She made things fun and would approach you instead of calling you out to the whole class. She'd tell you nicely to stop doing things or that you'd be sent to the office. She was very nice about everything. She knew when to be serious and when the have fun.

I have this teacher, and when we are taking notes someone will ask to use the restroom. The teacher will say just hold on we're almost done. Well we still had about 2 pages of notes to go then our teacher starts a movie. Again the kid asks if he can use the restroom. "After we finish this." By the time the movie is over the kid is like hanging of the edge of their seat ready to make a run for the door. Again the kid asks. "Oh we only have about 5 minutes left of class." the teacher says.

The amount of time between first time the kid asks to the end of class was roughly 20-25 minutes.
It's ridiculous.
During a movie, since we have questions to go along I could understand maybe waiting until it's over. although when we just take notes it's no big deal. One of us will give the kid the notes we took while they were gone.

They used to tell us in elementry school no gum. Now the teachers asks the students for gum to have. A couple friends and I had to take tables from one of our class and when we turned it over there was tons of gum stuck everywhere to the bottom of it...We can still chew gum..

Oh and I agree about the name thing. I hate to be called anything other than Kayla. I can't stand it when teachers call me by my last name, and I don't understand why we can't call them by their first names.

My school allows us to carry water bottles to drink in class, except for when we're in the labs, which is 1/4 of our day.

Most of my classes, save for Spanish, is pretty much open discussion while learning.

I hate to brag, but my school is one of the best in the state. The teachers don't treat us like children - we're treated like equals. We abuse our priviledges sometimes, such as going to our lockers to get homework, but that's about it, really.

My school isn't like a regular public high school - we all had to work our behinds off to land a spot in the freshman class.

I go to a rural public highschool.

But I have some wonderful teachers.

I can go to the front office, guidence, bathroom, library, learning lab(this is the special education office. I go down here to meet with the sped coordinator), another teacher's room, etc, if i have a reason, any time, within reason.

I am called by my first name (I hate being called Ms. Last name, because I have a complicated one, and its usually messed up.)

I can have gum, food, drinks in most of my classes.

I can raise my hand and make any comment I want to, as long as its pertinent to the discussion at hand.

My school has amazing teachers. But the Administration leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm in college right now to be a secondary education teacher (older kids). I think what made me want to be a teacher more than anything was to be different than some of the teachers I had in high school. I had a few teachers who I thought were amazing and were cool. I want to be someone students would feel like they could come and just talk to and not be afraid. Their was ONE teacher I had in high school that was like that and I had him last year and I think that only solidified my desire to be a teacher. If more teachers were like him, I think more kids would be excited about school.

Here's mine:
-Were human. I will drop your lowest test grade (if it's failing)
-Respect is mutual.
-I don't want to just throw words at you. Instead of just preaching to you, we should all talk.
-Vacations are a time for family, not to be overloaded with projects.

ITA. My 5th grade teacher gave us projects during every single vacation. If I get any projects this year I'm not doing it. I'm not gonna spend my time at WDW doing a stupid project for school.
