Perfect at Work

What does that have to do with your question about money being deducted from paychecks?

I am kind of wondering that myself. I would hate for all of the Fantasy and Hurricane Sandy garbage being brought up again. Hasn't it been hashed out enough? OP Gould get over it and get on with their life.

I'm assuming a change in the supposed topic after getting answers that she didn't like.

Otherwise, you are right, the question in the OP has nothing to do with the topic described.

Thanks for trying to turn this into a thread about tipping, which it is not.

I was recently on a Disney cruise where the Captain trailed too close to Hurricane Sandy. Our ship sustained tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to the ship and to merchandise. Disney offered discounts to every person on the ship on a future cruise - therefore, costing Disney even thousands more. Everybody makes mistakes - some more costly than others.

Did they deduct the ship repairs from the captains paycheck??? That would suck

My daughter works in Washington DC in one of the top hospitals in the country in coronary care in ICU. Mistakes can't be a part of her life. One error and her patient may die. She said to me one day while she was in school, they allowed us to get a 90% on the drug exam and still pass - 90% won't be good enough when we are actually working. Time doesn't allow her to get a second opinion before she does her job - time is life or death. But, a mistake could end her career.

So you are saying she should have her pay docked if a patient dies?

Seems to me your original post refered to the tipping thread that you were part of and now you are trying to steer in another direction.

I'm guessing a mistake wouldn't be good for the patient either.

Are you wondering if mistakes are allowed in other professions? Yes. They're even allowed in the health profession. The LEVEL of the mistake could cost someone their job in ANY profession though.

True enough. No ones perfect, and everyone makes mistakes but there are repercussions from your mistakes at work. If you work in a tipped position and mess up, you get a crappy or no tip. If you mess up as a doctor, your insurance expenses go up. If you mess up in sales, you lose a commission. Many times people are written up for mistakes at work. It's not the end of the world, hopefully you learn, grow and move on. If you get stuck in the unfairness of the repercussions instead of improving the job - you lose your job.

Some mistakes are worse than others. Creating a software bug in a word processing program may cause hours of pain to a customer, but nicking an artery during surgery can kill someone. Which reminds me of a joke:

What do you call someone who got all "C"'s in med school?

Doctor.

Actually, that's also what you call someone who graduated at the bottom of their class in med school.

This thread is confusing. :confused3

only because the original question was so vague that people are answering it based on their own interpretation of the question rather than what the OP was actually asking (because we aren't quite sure what was actually being asked)

I have never heard of a job where every single mistake, no matter how small, impacted your pay. Not even in a commission or tipped position. Little mistakes here or there that aren't deal breakers get fixed and the commission or tip is still paid.

If this is about the cruise and Sandy I've heard a lot of discussion about the situation and I doubt it was a call made solely by the captain. Even if it was I'm not sure what input he used to make the decision so without more facts I can't determine if he should be punished financially or not. I suspect if he went against protocol, disobeyed his superiors, or ignored meteorological information it is more likely that he'll be fired than have pay withheld unless there are fines that are levied because of his action. Maybe then he will be responsible for those.

It is kind of an odd and overly vague question without more context.

My pay is frequently deducted due to OTHER people's screwups. If I meet & exceed my financial goals, I could still go w/o a bonus if someone else screws up & costs the company money :(

It is being answered that way because the OP yaged from the tipping thread where she was a strong advocate of servers receiving their full tips even if many mistakes are made, and immediately started this thread.

So the assumption of many was that she was vaguely trying to make a point that servers should not have diminished tips when they make mistakes because other jobs do not deduct money for every mistake.

I have not read all the previous posts but I would be finding another job and checking with your local employment standards, it is probably not legal for them to deduct mistakes form your pay.

I haven't read the other threads but I would expect:
A captain who put his ship and passengers in danger to be relieved from duty, A server who screws up a lot to get a minimal to zero tip (and I am pretty tolerant, once tipped the girl who spilled a drink all down my back--she was very apologetic).

There are plenty of people I do expect perfection from in their jobs: the pilot landing the plane, the person setting up the radiation machine dosage during cancer treatment, the guy who pushes the button to send the nuclear warheads out, etc. If they are shown to lack perfection they need to be in different jobs.

""How would you like a job where, every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?" - Ken Dryden

:scratchin Me thinks Mr. Dryden was exaggerating just a tad. EVERY time he made a mistake??? Hmmm, in Chicago or New York 18,000 people were CHEERING when he made a mistake.:cheer2: In Montreal, 17,998 people were silent.

It's not like the back of his neck got sunburned too often anyway.

My base salary is always secure but if my customers are unhappy or I don't close enough loans in a month or I make too many mistakes, my bonuses are not guaranteed...they are based on how well I do those three things.

If this is the case......to me.....what someone earns as their hourly wage in a tipped position is their full wage.....the tip is a bonus for work above and beyond minimum service. But this is coming from someone living in a state where there is no special, lower minimum wage for those in tipped positions in the food industry. Here it is not uncommon for a good food service worker in a place like Denny's to pull down $20 an hour in tips on top of their $8 an hour minimum wage (or $10.55 an hour in cities like San Francisco with a living wage law).
