Viola-These plants enclude the pansy and violet family. Both like a soil rich in humus and a sunny location. They grow to heights of 6-10 inches and are lovely edging plants.

In my area pansies are grown as annuals, they do not return successfully in the area they are planted. They will however re-seed in other areas. I prefer a plant to stay in the area I have choosen it to be, therefore I use pansies as annual. Pansies are compact plants that will flower the whole summer if dead-headed regularly. Look into the face of a pansy and it's sure to bring a smile to your face, That pretty flower is smiling back at you.

Violets on the other hand are a true perennial. They will return year after year. I love seeing lawns in the spring covered with the purple or white of the violet.

Pansies of all sizes and colors are one of the "common," Home Depot-available species that I absolutely love, especially the johnny jump-ups! They are a great addition to hanging baskets. I've gotten the occasional volunteer from seeds falling from the baskets, but only in areas that get rtegular water like around my roses.
