Liriope-Sometimes called lilyturf. This is a plant thats looks like a ball of grass. In the fall this rather plain plant puts on it's show. Spikes of grape hyacinth type flowers, lilac-mauve in color, grow from the ball of grass. Liriope is rather easy to grow, just water lightly in hot weather. Liriope grows in sun and semi-shade, in ordinary well drained soil. It grows in heights 16-24 inches.

Not familiar with this plant. Thank you for bringing to my attention... sounds like a potential good fit in my garden! :)

Hm, not familiar with this one either, going to have to chek it out. thanks Mamu.

This is a very popular plant in my neck of the woods and one of my personal favorites. Mamu, can you tell me if this plant can be split/separated (like Hosta) when it gets too large? No one I have asked has been able to answer that question for me.

Yes it can be divided. Just dig it up in the spring or fall. I use a knife and just cut it into small sections. Replant and now you have lots of little liriope that fill out very quickly.

Here liriope is also called monkey grass. It will run all over the place and root any where. We have dug it up all put it where we think we want to plant it and forget to go back and put it in the ground only to find it has already taken root!

Our largest quantity runs the length of the driveway on both sides about 2 feet in width. In the early spring before the new growth starts we mow it down and in about 4 weeks it is back, fuller and beautiful. We have also thinned up the beds because they have gotten too wide. We just dug up what was too much and transplanted elsewhere.

We have the varigated type as well.

Wow. This plant sounds interesting. Anyone have a picture they can share of it?

Another ressurected thread because guess what I bought this weekend!?!

We pulled out my forsythia at the end of the driveway. I have been threatening to do same for years because they were really too close to the driveway and I hated hacking them back every year.

So I was doing some reading and found some info on this plant and decided that this would be good to fill in that area at the end of the driveway. I should have known The DIS flower board would have info about it on. Thanks Mamu.

LOVE liriope! I currently don't have any in my yard....the local garden center didn't have any this year and the drought killed some off that I had a few years ago!

Love these old threads! This board has been around for quite a while!

Liriope is sort of like "Long haired" Monkey grass with flowers.:p

One thing is in March(I live on the Gulf Coast) you should chop it down to get rid of last year's leaves.

I have both the solid green, black and the varigated varies and it can be divided at any time. This plant is almost indestructable!

Like Tiggerkeeper it runs the lenght of our drive and also borders most of my beds!
