People with nicknames - does this bug you?

my full name is Kristy and most of my family calls me Kris. i only ever had one friend who called me Kris, but it didn't bother me. and i wouldn't really mind if other people called me Kris, either.

And this is why my kids all have 4 letter names with no hope of shortening them.

My name is four letters and starts with a G....my mom did that so no one could shorten it....well for the past 26 years at work I am "G" ...that is it...just "G" I hated it at first but at this point I don't care--I answer to it everytime LOL

My name is Kody, so it really can't be shortened. :P

What really bugs me is when people assume I'm male because of my name. On the first day of my math class last year, my teacher was assigning seats by pointing at the seat and saying the person's name. I went and sat in the seat and she told me that Kody was supposed to sit there. I said "Yeah... I know... I'M Kody."

Sorry but that is a legitimate assumption.... I have never heard of Kody being used as a girls name- If I saw it I would think it was a boy too.

I was just mad that the teacher told me I was wrong and that I was NOT Kody.

dh is Patrick.. he does NOT go by Pat.. When someone calls and asks for Pat I said there is no Pat here but there is a Patrick is that who your looking for.. it bugs the heck out of me and its not even my name! Ds is Anthony.. we do not call him Tony, his name is Anthony :) My name can't be shortened.. so I dont have this problem :)
This is my DH. His name is David and he introduces himself that way. People immediately say, "Nice to meet you Dave." He'll correct them but if they insist on calling him Dave he just stops responding to them. (he's a seriously passive aggressive dude :lmao:) Our son is William and we are pretty quick to correct anyone who jumps to one of the million nicknames for his name. However we have a ton of nicknames we all use for each other (though I never call DH Dave, haha.)

On the flip side I have a habit of calling people by their full given name. For instance my brother goes by Chris and I always call him Christopher. My BIL goes by Bob or Rob, I call him Robert. I never thought if maybe that may bother someone. Hmmn...

Same problem here...I have a Gabriella and people insist on callling her Gabby, drives me absolutely crazy. She is most definitely NOT a Gabby and Gabriella suits her perfectly. I wanted to shorten to Brie as well (funny, don't think its common, so was suprised to see someone else with the same idea), but it never stuck. I am constantly correcting people and now my daughter does as well. The only nicknames that have stuck for a while but have faded a bit are Gabba (when she was in a toddler day care room none of the kids could say her name ;)) and then a teacher called be Gabs.

I try and take my cue from parents at school, if they call their child by a nickname/shortened name, then I do the same. There is 1 parent at my daughter's school that insists on calling my daughter Gabby, even after 4 years of NEVER hearing me say that and correcting her numerous times. I started called her son Andrew, Andy and she quickly corrected me..."oh we don't call him that"....well get a clue lady we don't call our child Gabby!

That is too funny! I wanted so bad to have her called Brie, NEVER thought anyone else would have that same idea...IDK why it didn't stick but it never did. She goes by Gabs too, my neices and nephews started calling her Gabbers, and she likes that a lot better than Gabby or Gabs. Now, the only time she even goes by Gabriella is when she is in trouble! She's a nickname girl all the way. Everyone does it, dance teacher, school teachers, principal, my co-workers, family, church people, everyone. She introduces herself as Gabbers and they just take it and run. Gabby, Gabbie, Gabs, Gabbers, she doesn't care so why should I, right.

My real name is Patricia, which is a bit formal for me so I usually go by Patty.

I hate when people call me Pat. It reminds of an old lady with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth (sort of like Hallmark's Maxine character). I don't know why, because I know people who are absolutely lovely who are named Pat, but when I am referred to as Pat, that is the image that jumps into my head.
