I am doing a lot of research trying to decide if we should purchase DVC. We have a family of 5. I have noticed there are on 3 resorts where I can get a 1br that would fit 5 of us. Were do you mainly stay and how many points do you have?

We just bought into DVC in 2010. We own at BLT and have gone twice to WDW in 2011. In April we stayed at a 2 bedroom at Bay Lake and the in August a 1 bedroom at Animal Kingdom Lodge. I was told that they will always allow 5 in a 1 bedroom that sleeps 4, with the thought that you can bring a air mattress or sleeping bag for number 5. There is only enough plates etc. for 4. I believe Hilton Head also sleeps 5 in a 1 bedroom. I also remembering see that Old Key West now has rooms that sleep 5. All they have to do is add a sleeper chair and the unit will sleep 5. My boys are older and prefer the 2 bedroom, but we know that a 1 bedroom will do the trick if we want to save points.

So, far we have enjoyed our DVC experience. I wish I would have bought in when they were younger. My oldest is going off to college, but DH and me can always use it when they are all out of college. We have about 11 years till that happens, so still plenty of time to vacation together. Also we can pass our ownership on to our children when the time is right.

We are planning to go to Hilton Head this summer. I have not decided on a 1 bedroom or 2.

Good luck with your decision.:thumbsup2

We are a family of five and we have 200 points. Our home resort is VWL which was great when the youngest was still in the pack and play. Now that they are older we would need a 2-bedroom there. But that's okay because we generally go every other year so we have plenty of points.

But we have stayed at BLT in the one bedroom which was great with the second bathroom. We have also stayed at OKW which doesn't have the extra bath but is nice and roomy. We are trying out Kidani next month in a 1-bedroom so we will see what that is like.

The question is you have to figure out how often you will be going and at what time of year so that you know what amount of points will work for your family. The fact that we can bank and borrow makes a huge difference for us.

Personally I love that they have sleeper chairs at some resorts to be able to still get the 1 bedroom. I think there is plenty of room in them for our family of five. DVC has really spoiled us because if we travel somewhere else it is almost impossible to find hotel rooms that accommodate five.

WAIT, Does every 1br really let you bring a air mattress?????? I really don't need one. Right now my boys are so young that they would fit find in 1 full/queen bed. But if they let a 5th child in the room that would work out GREAT!

They always have in the past. That doesn't mean that they will in the future.

So can I rent a studio with 5???? (that works good for us right now since my kids are so young)

Excited that I can still get a 1 bedroom at all the resorts and not just 2!!!

We actually get a 2 bedroom for just the 3 of us quite a bit of the time. That's how DVC will spoil you!

The official occupancy of a one-bedroom unit is 4 persons plus a child under 3 in a pack-and-play crib. That said, there is a lot of discussion on the topic. There's a dedicated thread here on the DVC boards to which all disucssions on room occupancy are supposed to be restricted. You can find the thread here: ongoing occupancy thread.

Family of five here. Our kids are an older teen and young adults. We always have stayed in a 2 bedroom. Our last trip was in a beach cottage at Vero and now I am not sure I could stay in anything but a grand villa! DVC definitely can spoil you. You can always add on more points as the kids get older and you find you need the larger accommodations.

As a previous poster stated, DVC Occupancy is a hot topic, and the discussion is limited to the DVC Occupancy Thread.

You may continue the discussion there, if you wish.

Thanks.
