People who hold onto checks

As I said, my problem is not so much balancing the checkbook, it's knowing if the gift was received. At the wedding you probably handed them the card, but when it's in the mail you are left to wonder if it was received. Not everyone is good about sending a thank you.

I remember I sent my niece $100 for her daughter's 3rd birthday. Months later I asked if she was ever going to cash it and found out she never received it. I think if people are going to hold onto checks they should at least acknowledge receiving them (but that's another thread, LOL!)

That's what I don't get either. When I write a check I know that money's gone from my checking account. I balance my checkbook accordingly when I write the check!

We're not talking about subtracting it from the checkbook - that's not balancing. Balancing is when, at the end of each month, you compare your bank statements to your checkbook and make an accounting for each and every check/transaction. There is no way NOT to be reminded of this check every time you do so.

No one is saying it's the end of the world. I'm just amazed that people keep acting like they balance their checkbook yet don't even notice. That's really not possible.:confused3

Honestly, it's not so bad in my personal checkbooks, but when I've done treasurer for organizations it can be a royal pain.

We couldn't deposit our checks after our wedding for 3.5 months. Since they were made out to 'Mr. & Mrs'. New Last Name', my name HAD to be changed in order for the bank to accept the checks. I couldn't sign the checks in my maiden name.

Our marriage certificate didn't arrive for 2 months and then it took another few weeks for my new SS card to arrive.

Nothing could be done in our situation and no one seemed bothered by it.

This! Thankfully we were able to deposit all our checks because instead of mr and mrs people wrote husband and wife last name. Because husband's name was the same we could deposit (but not cash). Its also why I make checks out to one of the parties in a marriage and if its the wife I use her maiden name. Makes things much simpler.

We deposited our checks and extra cash the day after our wedding or maybe it was two days. We didn't want to leave it all in the house while we were away.

It sure can be aggravating. I noticed the school is really bad for that. They hold checks forever.

Exactly.

You can't balance the checking account without taking into account an outstanding check.

You're right, it's not the end of the world, and it's really not even a big deal, it's just slightly annoying.

Our school is the same way. It takes them months to cash them.

I wrote a check for my daughter's Girl Scout cookies over 5 weeks ago. I'm also a leader so I know the money was due in the bank 4 weeks ago. I finally called the leader to make sure she didn't misplace it. Her co-leader forgot to deposit them.

I agree with those who say, who cares?
Once I write the check, I really don't care what happens to it. I log it, and then I know the money is gone. I would never write a check to someone and then stalk them if they failed to cash it in a timely manner.
