Hmmm, I thought it stood for Donuts and Coffee!?!

Oh, wait a sec...that's just what I want right now! :teeth:

Since we are on the subject, I have a totally stupid question that, as an American I should know. Im almost embarrassed to ask, but what the heck.
While driving through there on our way to WDW last year, it got me thinking. What exactly is Washington DC? Its not a state, but is it techncially part of Virginia? Maryland? Another state? Is it considered a city? Or something else? See what 24 hours in a car looking at maps will make you think of! :teeth:

Actually, if I remember correctly..at one point DC tried to become a state. But, like Quebec...it didnt work out. But it is a Federal City.

it doesn't mean Disney Community?? :duck:

District of Columbia but you are the US not Columbia hehehe.

Just to give you the history in a nutshell, the District of Columbia originally included 30 or so square miles ceded from Virginia and the current 68.25 square miles ceded from Maryland. In 1846, Congress returned the land on the Virginia side to Virginia.

Until 1967, DC was run by 3 commissioners appointed by the president. Now it is run by an elected mayor and city council, but Congress has considerable authority over the district and isn't afraid to use it ;)

There has been considerable talk among DC folks of making it a state. But that talk has been largely confined to DC folks. Their license plates say "Taxation without representation" on them ;) Personally, I say give it back to Maryland and the issue is settled. But I doubt Maryland wants it back.

Thanks so much you guys. I know I was told 7 yrs ago by my eldest DS's school teacher, but I swear it wasn't District of Columbia she said. I'm sure I'd have remembered that.

Anyway, the reason I asked was that it was a question on tv here the other morning & I was sure it was something Capital & DH was sure it was Dominion Capital.

District of Columbia somehow doesn't make sense, but then I guess that because I always figured DC was around NY. Don't know why, but I sure as heck never imagained it down Virginia way.

You live & learn hey? So, thank you one & all. I'll remember it now & also we know that what they said on telly was in fact correct & we were wrong:(
