People Mag source on WDW

Heard this on the news. Very scary, but to be honest it didn't surprise me. I have always assumed terrorists had their eye on WDW. Sucks that we have to share our planet with evil sickos.

Disney's bag check and recent upgrades make the parks about as safe as can be short of a TSA type shake down. Disney Springs will always be a soft target IMHO.

Does something like this have an impact on crowd levels for the immediate future? I wonder if this will spook a significant number of people.

When I heard about the shooting Sunday morning I immediately wondered if WDW was on his "list."

This is my thought as well. Such a target IMO (lots of people, American icon, popular tourist place etc.) Let's face it, even with security and bag checks it's still not 100% safe.

I've always felt downtown disney is a target as well. No security to get in, lots of people etc.

The news doesn't surprise me at all, but still makes you stop in your tracks. I was THERE in April, at DS. I mean, it just makes your skin crawl.

No place is safe...not even the happiest place on earth.

I just saw that too...scary. The fact that there is no type of security check to enter DS has crossed my mind when I've been down there. We're planning a trip for Dec and while I'm not ready to cancel at this point, all of this has made me think. We were actually down there last Nov when the attacks in Paris occurred and I remember just trying to push the terrifying thoughts from my mind so they didn't ruin our trip. I know that anything can happen anywhere and I'm sure Disney is doing its best to protect everyone but the thoughts of the possible tragedies that could occur in a place with so many people are very troubling.

I just saw this article. It sickens me to think we really aren't safe no matter where we go!

While the fact that DS doesn't have tight security is true, this article is a blatant fearmongering attention grab. The fact that he went to DS with his ex-wife does not mean that he was 'scouting' the area for his crime.

I am holding off on visiting for now to see what the plan for security there is myself, but not because of this article.

I still call it Downtown Disney - I have to force myself to call it Disney Springs :) But I'm sure they're addressing it. I remember back years ago when it was still "Pleasure Island" there was restricted entry becuase they checked IDs. I don't know if the new expansion would prevent them returning to something like that. It is unsettling- but I'm sure they have doubled their undercover security anyway.

wow I never even thought about the security at Disney Springs...I guess because it just reminds me of a shopping outlet and not really Disney related, but in reality it is Disney related...guess we won't be visiting there on our next trip which should make my family happy bc they always hated Disney Springs

The fact that he went to DS with his ex-wife does not mean that he was 'scouting' the area for his crime.

Actually - if the "federal law enforcement source" is telling the truth - that's exactly what he was doing as the quote from the article states:

Omar Mateen and his wife, Noor Zahi Salman, visited Walt Disney World in April, the source says. Salman told federal authorities on Sunday that her husband had more recently been "scouting Downtown Disney and Pulse [nightclub] for attacks."

I disagree. I think Disney is doing everything they can to allow massive casualties.

1 suicide bomber can kill hundreds at the MK without going through security. The security checkpoints are a perfect kill zone. Just imagine a bomb going off at the bag check about 8 people back from the security officer.

Disney and the rest of the world needs to find a way to keep people from congregating at security checkpoints.

That's a really good point. Disney is the perfect target for a psycho looking for a destination that is consistently crowded.

My question is WHY did she not go to the police when he was scouring locations for his attacks?!?!

I do not think this source is credible. She divorced him in 2009 after four months of marriage. No way was she with him recently from the interview I saw. Not that he couldn't have had an eye on Disney, but the ex-wife would not have known anything about it.

He remarried.

Boy did we dodge the bullet. Just heard on the news this terrorist was casing out Disney!!
