We use Crayola Super Tips and have never had a problem. Honestly, they're not extra thick or big or anything, but no one has seemed to have an issue as long as we take off the cap (and they're washable in case of any accidents). It's the markers we need to use for our Make A Plate souvenir (which we love!) so they also use the same marker in the autograph books.
I would think a ballpoint pen might be tougher since they don't always flow easier. But a nice fresh marker (Sharpie, Crayola, or other) is easy to write with and doesn't require much pressure to write well.
