We drove on the turnpike and accidentally went through an EZpay exit. We were in the left lane and didn't realize it until it was too late. We got a paper in the mail today for $27.40 toll balance and $25.00 administrative fee.
We paid our other tolls, SEVERAL of them and I feel this is a very unfair amount. Have you had any luck appealing or calling them to pay a smaller fee?
The fee would have probably been a few dollars at the most had we not missed it. Are we just out of luck to the greedy gov.?

this happened to me once in nyc and once in boston both time i sent in the toll fee with a letter stating what happened and they were happy with that! good luck!!!

THis has happened to us before. :( From my experience they really don't care.

Happened to us once, in PA too. After a long letter writing/phone calling campaign, we ended up paying the thing. Was taking up too much time and energy. Had to chalk it up as a learning experience. Makes me mad all over again just thinking about it...

Our EZ Pass didnt' register one time (it was a new car so we didn't have it linked to the car yet) and we got the letter with the fine. I called them and they just deducted the regular toll amount from our EZ Pass. It was a very easy process, but we did have the EZ Pass, so I'm not sure how easy they are to work with if you don't.

Call them, tell them what happened. See if they will just let you pay the toll. If not, try a written appeal.

Just how is this unfair? You drove through a toll without paying; now you owe the toll and a fine. Pay it.

I'm not sure how you can miss the many warnings about toll booths coming up.

she is saying and I know excatly what she means she got in the pre-paid line and there is no way to pay cash at that point!! then thetoll commission billed her for tolls along theentire road!! and a pently fee!!

Contact the toll comisson and explain ask what to toll for that point was and offer to pay on spot with Charge!! hope it works for ya!!

I understand what happended; I have driven these toll roads any times. I can't understand how you can miss all the warnings about certain lanes being only for those with transponders.

Put on the big girl/ boy panties and pay the fine. It's possible if you had contacted them immediately they might have waived the fine. There's usually info at the toll booths, I think, that says something about calling if you don't pay. I've seen something at some booths before. In any case, that was not done, so now you are no different than someone who intentionally blew through the toll booth even if you didn't mean to.

A guy I work with got a fine in the mail. His wife wrote a note along with the payment explaining that their Garmin routed through that lane and they sent their check back.

This happen to me once I was following my husband he was driving a trailer and I had a car with 5 kids. I was not paying close attention and thought I read that it was a license plate charge and drove through and my husband called my cell and asked me if I paid the toll as he saw me just drive right pass LOL. What I did was tell them at the next booth what I did and paid the charge for that one and the one I missed. They took down my license and gave me a proof that I did indeed pay the toll after all. She said I was not the first and would not be the last.

Oh no! Good luck disputing this if you try.

I am from PA and have EZPass. It clearly states that if you go through an EZPass lane without an EZPass it will charge you the highest amount of tolls possible and a charge for processing.

Concting them can't hurt, but I don't know how they will react.

Just a PSA at least for the tolls in IL - If you blow through a tool via the IPass lanes, or if you do not have the correct change exiting the toll...you can log on and pay the toll within 7 days. Just saying...I had lots of bills....just not $1.90 in change!

We have an Ipass now!

I did not intentionally blow through a toll booth. We paid several along the same turnpike.
My husband was listening to the navigation system that told him to keep left not realizing that he was already at the toll.
I was turned around dealing with our 14 month old baby at the time. He told me right after it happened and it isn't like we could have turned around. We are not familiar with toll etiquette so we did not know we could have paid it at the next toll booth along with that toll or we would have done that obviously.

I am going to try to call the number on the paper and write a letter as well. Thanks for reading

This has happened to me before. I paid the amount they wanted. I was afraid I would end up having to drive to the state where it happened and having to go to court.

There are instructions on the back. You need to fill it out, enclose the toll ticket you have from when you entered the turnpike and send a check for the amount of the toll from entry point to where you exited. It's very easy.

I was charged a fine on the NJ turnpike once. However it was their error not mine. I had paid the toll to an actual person. The letter I got said I had to pay the toll price even if i wanted to dispute the fine. So I paid the toll (again) and in my letter said that I had paid the toll the first time to an actual person in the booth and I did not feel that I should pay the extra fine since i had now paid the toll twice. They waived the penalty. In your case OP even though it was an accident it was a cause of you/dh making the mistake rather than the toll taker. It can't hurt to call but be prepared to pay the fine.

frankly, you've already spent more than the fine in time and effort here.

I'd just pay it and move on.

Of course, that's me.

This exact same thing happened to me about a year ago. We were on the Atlantic City Expressway. We accidentally got in the wrong lane and could not get over into the cash lane. So we went thru, then told them at the next toll booth what we had done. He took our money for the previous toll (somewhere around $3.00) and gave us a receipt and told us that when we got the fine notice to just mail in the receipt he had given us.

We did receive a fine notice and just mailed it back with the receipt that we were given.

Now I don't know what you do if there is no upcoming toll booth...????

Our toll problem was a little different. We paid the toll by throwing coins into the basket and the light didn't turn green. So I dug out more change and paid it again. Still no green. My husband refused to pay a third time, but there was a phone number posted as someone above mentioned. I called and they said it happens all the time when the machine gets too full of money. I was annoyed that I paid twice, but at least noted the date, time and person I spoke with in case I got a ticket. Never did.
