I saw a very informative thread containing all kinds of tips when pressing pennies. I have been trying to find it for the last 30 min. and gave up! :badpc:

so far I know to:
clean the pennies
use older than 1982 pennies

any other tips? Face up or down?

TIA

Someone posted that they used pennies from the same year as their trip. We're going to try that this year-great idea to remember which pennies are from which trip. I know, you're supposed to use the pre-82 ones, but the kids like the shiny ones better anyway. ;)

I know that when you put the pennies into the machine, one way is better than the other. I believe you want the head side facing left. But I really can't remember which way it is! :confused3

EDIT: Ok, I just checked another board that has pressed penny tips, and you want the tails side to be facing left. The head should face the right.

Why are you supposed to use pre-1982 pennies and why are they supposed to face right? We always used the brightest ones and never paid attention to which way they faced. :confused3

If you go to allearsnet, beyond the parks, pressed pennies, you will be amazed to find everything. It has all the locations of the penny pressing machines and quarter pressing machines and what imprint is on each. It also explains which direction, etc. to feed the coins into the machine.

The books are located at all of the resort hotels and most of the gift shops that I saw. They were $6.50

DD8 used the shinnest pennies she could find, with no regard to which direction they faced, nor what year. They all turned out great. The only difference I could tell in any of them, was that some of the designs with lots of detail were hard to make out. Maybe that's just because of my "tired, old eyes". She said she could see them fine. :)

I use the shiny pennies too. As for why they're supposed to face right, I really don't know. I just read it on some other Disney site, and they said that it works best that way. I've done it both ways though, and it doesn't make a whole lot of difference. I guess though the image comes out better the one way. Who knows. :confused3

press lincoln head not the building as lincoln head presses better, so do to this have lincoln's head facing to the right as this is how most penny machines work

Pre-1982 pennies have a lower Zinc content, with newer pennies you can get a silverish (zinc) coloring to the pressed penny.

If you soak your pennies in vinegar it will shine them up. Much better than using BRASSO :cool1: Also press them so Lincoln's head is the side being imprinted, they press better and are more clear.

You can buy the books in any gift shop. They have books just for quarters or the penny/quarter combo books. I didn't see any just penny books in June.

DD5 got hooked on her first trip in June. We are heading back in April and she is already saving pennies.

I SO misread the title of this thread . . . :rotfl:

On average, how many pennies do you end up pressing? I am getting ours ready for next weekend. I don't want to try to find all of them either. TIA!

Great idea about using pennies the same year as the trip! My DD-9 loves collecting these pressed pennies!
