Anyone have a pekingese? If so, how do you like your dog? Any tips?

We're thinking of rescuing one from our local shelter, I was just curious what to look for, ask.

If it helps, she's a black pekingese, about a year old.

Sorry, I can't help.....I've never had a Pekingese. I just wanted to say how CUTE they are. I would LOVE to have one.

We just got a 7-week-old Boxer.....and although, she's so cute, the puppy stage is very tiring. I think a 1-year-old is a GREAT AGE!

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Hello! I love, love, love my pekingese. They are total lovebugs, with a serious stubborn side. They do require a lot of grooming, to say the least, but that also depends on how you want their hair. I keep my dogs short because we live out in the country and he doesnt realize he has fluffy hair that needs to be brushed, so he's shaved and hangs out in a jacket in the winter.

Honestly, I have never had any serious issues with mine, health wise, that wasn't a weird accident. As long as you are okay with a sneezing, snoring, snorting ball of fur, I'd say go for it. I have found them to be my favorite dog ever since I adopted my first one from a shelter years ago. Oh, and I find mine to shed very little.

:)

We have an albino pekingese. We will have had her for ten years in the Spring. She is such a good dog. We love her so much. Grooming is required but she's worth it. She has never given us any trouble at all.

We got her from a woman who rescues albino pekes in Minnesota because breeders kill them at birth because they aren't AKC approved.

My aunt breeds them.

She's had ones that are sweet as pie, and others that are mean as mean could be. I've yet to meet one that was in between (she keeps MANY of them as pets, and others to breed) .

They are VERY prone to popped eyeballs, which often can't be fixed. I can remember at least 10 of the dogs she has had that lost eyes.

They need to be groomed OFTEN, and good luck grooming the tails of the mean, stubborn ones. :rotfl:

The stubborn ones aren't great with kids... they snip and bark and snap. Many of my cousins have been snapped at by the stuborn ones over the years.

They don't seem to be big cuddlers. My aunt had three that I can remember being the sweetest of sweet, and neither one liked to cuddle for long.

They snore, grunt, and make noise.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else to mention.

Thank you! I remember hearing about the thing with the eyeballs from someone. Thank you! The description they gave her on the website says "Hello, my name is Kayla and I am a pure-bred Pekingese. The Pekingese breed is known to be calm and quiet, dignified, independent, and sometimes stubborn. In addition to all of those traits, I also happen to believe that I am descended from royalty, which is why my foster mom usually calls me "Princess Kayla". Although I had a tough start when I first arrived at the rescue (I was heartworm positive and also had a back injury that required surgery), the folks at AFH took great care of me, and now I am ready to go to my Forever Home! If you are looking for an active companion to chase tennis balls and go for daily jogs, then just keep on looking! I prefer to spend my time on a bed, a couch, or a pillow, and (unless food is involved) I can't imagine any reason I would want to leave my cozy spot! Because of my back surgery, I'm not supposed to go up and down a lot of stairs. That's not a problem for me because I like to be carried anyway, but if you live somewhere with a lot of stairs and you don't want to carry me all the time, then I might not be the best dog for you. I like other dogs, and I don't think I have an opinion about cats...I'm also OK with children as long as I have a crate or other safe place to go when I am ready for a break! Besides all of that stuff, I am a sweet, gentle, and loving dog who will melt your heart with my big eyes and even bigger personality!"

I can certainly agree with the popped out eyeballs, since mine had an eyeball accident earlier this year, although I wasn't home, and I'm certain he got too playful with a large foster dog. So now he's my one eyed wonder peke. In general, he is lazy and does love to be carried. He sits up like a prairie dog and bounces his paws up and down when he wants us to pick him up. He does have spurts of energy, but is usually a calm little dude.

They (in my experience) are very independent, when they feel like it. Mine is a cuddle bug, when he feels like it. I recommend them, but of course I'm biased. But I have had a lot of vet bills, but that could be that he just has zero fear and has no perception of the fact he is all of 11lbs. Knee surgery already scheduled for the flying superman leaps he takes off any and all furniture he can find. My other dogs have cost me little vet money, so as usual with all things, YMMV.

But, if you do adopt her, I'm sure she will be a fabulous little friend. :)

She sounds like a total doll, but one who is really not that great with kids. Experienced eye reading between the adoption agency lines here.

Please do read up on all the potential health problems and grooming expenses re. Pekingese before commiting. Lots of $$ involved to keep these dogs happy and healthy.

The short faced dogs do all tend to have major breathing problems as well as eye issues. You must also be willing to wash that little face after all meals. And the fur will get everywhere. But everywhere, even with regular grooming.

I dunno. All the pekingese I've ever met have been charming. I don't think I've met a stubborn or mean one. YET. Low key, rather uppity, but charming.

They have generally resembled sedentary pugs with lots and lots of fur. And (just in case that sounded an insult to pugs) I love pugs because they are such jolly little dogs who have great senses of humor.

I know of at least one Pekingese with a sense of humor.
